night patrols are a lot of things: better than parking duty, for one, but also, long, exhausting, utterly impossible without the assistance of coffee ( and an entertaining partner --- not that nick would let that small fact out ). but here he is, sitting alone in a car nestled in the shadows between two high-rise buildings and sipping coffee long gone cold while he awaits the crackle of static that proceeds some report of a burglary or something. waiting gets dull sometimes, and it’s not that the officer is an impatient person ( after all, cons take time to be executed properly ), but clock hands are ticking towards 2 am and from where he’s parked, it looks like the city that never sleeps is getting pretty drowsy and his vision is getting weird.
which might be why he almost doesn’t see the trespasser. actually, that reason probably goes to the fact that it’s dark, but either way, it takes a heartbeat or two before the car door is opening and he’s got a powerful 500 lumen flashlight in hand. “ if i may ask --- what are you doing? ”
