“Hey, you,” Greaseball said, sliding a hand around Electra’s waist as he came to a stop next to him.

Electra leaned into the touch. He’d just finished work for the day and while he wouldn’t say he was tired, it was nice to let his muscles relax. “Hi.”

“What’re you up to for the rest of the afternoon?”

“Nothing in particular,” Electra said with a shrug. “Why? Did you have something in mind?”

“I don’t know. I was thinking we could do something, just you and me. Hit the tracks, take in the scenery. Maybe find somewhere nice and quiet for just the two of us.”

Electra pulled a face. “Greaseball, I just got off the tracks; I don’t want to go back on.”

A small sparkle lit up in Greaseball’s eyes at the words. “Well, what if I pull you?”

“Pull me?” Electra couldn’t stop the laugh that burst out at the thought. “You’re joking.”

“What?” Greaseball said with a pout. “You think I can’t handle it?”

There was a playfulness in Greaseball’s voice, but a seriousness as well. Like this was an actual idea he was offering for Electra to seriously consider. That rubbed Electra the wrong way. “I’m not a coach,” he said, somewhat snappily. The only time engines like him got pulled was when something was wrong with them and they couldn’t move for themselves.

“I know you’re not,” Greaseball said. He seemed to have missed the implications of his offer because he wasn’t immediately apologizing or back-tracking. Instead, he doubled down on it. “I just thought it would be nice, that’s all.”

“Hmph.”

“Aw, c’mon. You don’t want all this” --he flexed his biceps-- “to go to waste, do you?”

Electra chuckled. “If you wanted to pull me, I think you’d be using a little more of these.” He reached around Greaseball and cupped the diesel’s ass in his hands. Greaseball jumped, startled by the touch, and Electra smirked. He dragged his hands slowly down to Greaseball’s thighs, teasingly gliding his fingers over the inner-most part.

Electra was watching his face, could see the moment Greaseball’s brain short-circuited. After a few moments, Greaseball swallowed thickly. “If you keep doing that,” he said, his voice suspiciously tight, “we’re not even going to make it out of the yard.”

“Would that really be such a bad thing?” Electra purred, stepping in closer so that he was just a hair’s breadth from Greaseball’s chest. He flicked his gaze down to Greaseball’s lips, biting his own as he tilted his head in, waiting for Greaseball to kiss him. He kept up the teasing strokes on Greaseball’s thighs, knowing that in just a few moments, the argument would be won.

Unfortunately, Greaseball chose that moment to get himself together. He grabbed Electra’s forearms, jerkily, like he had to force himself to do it. “Yes,” he said, “it would. Because I already offered to pull you.”

“So?”

“So, I want to pull you.” There was an earnesty in Greaseball’s voice that Electra had not been expecting. He’d thought it had just been a random idea Greaseball had put forth, but it seemed to be something he genuinely wanted to do. “Come on,” Greaseball said, turning around to present his couplers to Electra, “hitch on.”

For a moment, Electra hesitated. The same objections that rose up in his mind when Greaseball first gave him the proposition came back to him now. But now, he considered a new take on the situation. It seemed important to Greaseball to do this. Electra knew, of course, how special it felt for an engine to pull their partner. It was a much different feeling than pulling an entire line--it was closer, more intimate. It was an inevitability in any relationship between an engine and a coach or an engine and a freight car, but between two engines?

Electra had been in enough relationships with other engines that the experience of pulling his partner wasn’t necessarily vital to him. But, he reminded himself, Greaseball had only ever dated coaches before. He might be missing this.

With that realization, Electra softened. He couldn’t deny Greaseball something that was so important to him. “Okay,” Electra said. Swallowing his pride, he reached out and hitched on to Greaseball’s couplers.

Electra could feel the joy radiating out from the diesel; he didn’t need to see his face to know he was beaming. A small part of him couldn’t help but feel proud that he could make Greaseball so happy.

Feeling Electra hitched on securely behind him, Greaseball set off. He started out at a slow pace like he wanted to give Electra time to get used to it.

Being pulled felt a little… different than Electra was expecting. It was a different way of moving, to be sure. Rather than setting the pace, he was following; rather than constantly checking behind to make sure his line was doing alright, he was the one giving reassurances that he was okay, that the speed wasn’t too fast, that the track conditions weren’t too bad. And, he had to admit, it actually felt kind of nice. Greaseball was making sure to take care of him and it showed. Electra could feel the affection in every glance Greaseball gave him over his shoulder, in every corner Greaseball turned gently for him.

Slowly but surely, Electra began to relax. Any thoughts of what the others would think of seeing him being pulled slipped from his mind. All that mattered to him now was him and Greaseball, moving as one down the track, perfectly united. He couldn’t have stopped himself from smiling if he tried.

And if the small seed of an idea of whether or not Greaseball might appreciate Electra pulling him next time took hold… well, who was to say it was a bad one?

Can i ask about *both* Greaseball and Electra? 👉👈

- diesel engines tend to get oil buildups around their eyes/mouths/fingers/joints and they'll stain if they're not cleaned regularly. greaseball has more than usual so he's ummm greasy (that's how he got his name)

- his headband was a gift from dinah when they were younger! she made it herself :)

- electra has a huge sweet tooth and will go through whole spools of electrical wire like they're nothing. wrench has him on a strict limit but the other components still sneak him some

- they have a built in translator so they can technically speak multiple languages (it doesn't always work right. hijinks have occurred)

- electra is a very highly experimental engine primarily used to show off technological advancements. unfortunately his creators cut a few corners so he's prone to random shutdowns and system reboots (the latter comes with mild-to-severe memory loss, depending on how bad the crash was)

Hello! Do you know if it matters which mission you do first, A Trail of Hope on Vould, or Jaal's quest friend or foe on Havarl in order to proceed with his romance? I'm a bit of a completionist and I would prefer to finish all the quests on Vould before I move on to another planet so :/ I'm so scared to screw up somehow and not trigger the flirts with him >->

Jaal’s romance is tied to your main quest progress. And also his loyalty, but main quest is more important at this point. I do sudgest following the main quest and do Jaal’s loyalties after your current quest (yeah, there is a few and friend-foe is the start of the branch), but make sure you’re done with whole branch before “Hunting the Archon” is completed so you can follow the right timeline. And don’t forget to flirt a lot! :) You’ll get an invitation to visit his family after this quest if loyalty branch is done and commit here.

I was just curious if you've read The Fire Rose by Mercedes Lackey? :) I started reading it a few days ago and so far it seems pretty good, I'm all for books that features beasts that doesn't turn back into humans in the end (the rose daughter is next on my list to read!)

I have read indeed! I must confess that I really prefer Rose Daughter, but if readers are looking for more of a fantasy Victoriana deal with some steampunk flair to it, Fire Rose fits the bill!
