I've always been a big fan of both anime and the mecha subgenre of anime, so when Dad compared the concept for Pacific Rim to a mecha anime that I quite like (Neon Genesis Evangelion) I was instantly interested in it. I saw that there was a lot of hype being built around it, as you'd expect from a movie with a huge budget and highly-detailed mecha and machines. And, as usual, I had a feeling that the movie would underperform, just like almost every overhyped movie and game I've heard about. Boy, was I wrong. I don't know where to start: The basic concept of the film is that aliens - giant, vicious aliens called Kaiju (Japanese for strange creature, monster, giant monster) - come through a portal at the bottom of the pacific ocean. Humanity's governments come together (yay!) and decide to build giant fighting mecha called Jaegers (yay-ger, German for hunter) to fight them off. And it works. The visual effects were simply amazing. The Jaegers look real. The Kaiju look real. Even the people look real (lol). If the plot was absolute rubbish, I would have loved the effects alone. I was reminded of the Tau Empire with the Jaegers (the Aussie Jaeger, Striker Eureka, looked similar to an XV104 Riptide), and Tyranids with the Kaiju. It's like an army of aquatic Godzillas vs dual-piloted fighting robots (mecha, actually), but so much cooler. And then there's the story. As the Jaegers are controlled by a neural interface, they require but a thought to control. However, when they tested it on a single pilot, most of them died from too much thinkingness. So, their new plan: Two pilots. Each one essentially takes a hemisphere of a Jaeger brain under their control, and the two's minds and memories are linked together. Naturally, the more compatible a pair of pilots are, the better they can kick Kaiju arse. Naturally, this leads to some interesting things - What happens when your co-pilot is ripped out the Jaeger while you're both connected? This is how the movie starts, with the protagonist (Raleigh Becket, played by Charlie Munnam)'s brother being eaten by a Kaiju. Having a twin brother, the feels ran high here. Without giving too much away, this is what happens: He goes into hiding for five years, then is reunited with the Jaeger program with a new pilot, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), and has to fight EVEN BIGGER Kaiju. There are many tropes and cliches in the film, but in my humble opinion they're either well-executed, undetectable or simply swept aside by the amazing characters and storyline. For example, the Russian Jaeger is a series 1 that is still capable of kicking arse, while the Aussie one is a series five and outfitted with the coolest stuff (and is a lot faster than all the others). I heard from mum that the director made some very clever decisions when making this: The Jaeger pilots aren't a military faction, but similar to Rangers (their boss is called Marshall, not general) and an ambiguously amiable relationship between the lead male and female (they don't actually kiss or anything, but act very close. Shipping ahoy!). In fact, I noticed that there weren't many notable actors in the film at all: The only one I recognised by name and appearance only was Burn Gorman, who played Owen in the Doctor Who spinoff, Torchwood. He was a scientist :) Of course, there's some bad things about this: The Aussie characters had apparently terrible accents. In fact, that's all I can really say against it, and even then I don't care. There were my country's folk in Pacific Rim, guys, and we have the best Jaeger. Another thing I liked about it was the fact that it didn't feel like it was trying to be the best movie ever, and yet it managed to become one of my top, next to Pulp Fiction and District 9. If the fact that it was comparable to Neon Genesis Evangelion didn't sell it for me, nor the giant mecha, then the sheer fact that Ellen McLain was voicing the main characters' Jaeger Gipsy Danger's AI would have. Seriously guys. Ellen McLain. For those who don't know (and I wonder how you wouldn't) McLain voices GLaDOS in Portal and Portal 2. GLADOS IS THE AI VOICE OF THE MAIN CHARACTER'S JAEGER, GUISE, I CANNOT EXPRESS MY SHEER GLEE AT THAT. If I didn't get you Portal fans addicted to watching Pacific Rim then you're a lost cause :) In fact, I even read that del Toro had to get permission from Valve to have McLain voice in there specifically as a homage to Portal. I'm going to be watching it again in 3D in a while, and then probably at the Astor Theater. And both those times I will be intently waiting for McLain's voice to crop up. Or simply get so wrapped up in it that I won't care.
