"School is dumb anyway." That comment broke the last strand of Nico's patience.

"I just don't get what the big deal is. It was such a pain to finally get me through to graduation and now she wants me to go to college?" Percy complained, lazily playing with Nico's hair as they lounged in Cabin 3. The son of Hades' eyebrow twitched but he restrained the anger sprouting in his throat, remaining in his spot against the older demigod's chest.

"She's just trying to help you, Perce."

"But I don't want to go to college. It's pointless to waste my time there when I could be here, training so that I don't get slaughtered by a monster. School is dumb anyway." That comment broke the last strand of Nico's patience. He shot up to a sitting position and glared down at his boyfriend.

"Would you stop? I've never had the privilege of going back to school and I never will. I've been stuck in camp and the Underworld for years and trust me, it's not as fun as you seem to think it is."

"How about you trust me when I say that school sucks even more. It's not like you'd know personally," Percy said, immediately regretting his words when he saw the way Nico's nostrils flared and he was leveled with a glare only the Prince of the Underworld could give.

"You're such a fucking asshole! You're the one who fucking ripped me out of school in the first place!"

"It was for your own good! Geez, Nico, would you calm down?"

"Don't you fucking tell me to calm down! You know how much I wish I could go back to school! You don't know how lucky you are to be able to learn!"

"Everything I've learned in school is bullshit anyway! The shit that matters is what I learn here!"

"Do you realize that everything I know is from a few years of elementary school in the 1940s, one semester at Westover, and fucking smart ghosts that I've intimidated into teaching me! I would love to be able to go to school but I don't have that opportunity, Perseus!" The son of Poseidon knew he was in trouble when the smaller boy used his full name. "You know what, whatever. Go fuck yourself," Nico spat before turning on his heel and heading to the door.

"Nico, babe, don't––" Percy began, moving to follow him. He stopped in his tracks when Nico raised a middle finger over his shoulder and stormed off. He sighed, blowing his bangs out of his eyes and watching as other campers gave Nico a wide berth. The black-clad demigod stomped over to his cabin and slammed the door behind him. Percy waited for a moment before grabbing something off his dresser and approaching Cabin 13. He knocked on the door before calling out to the cabin's occupant, "Nico? C'mon, you know I didn't mean to piss you off."

"Well, congratulations, you did a good fucking job of it," came the angry but muffled response.

"Babe, I'm gonna start singing if you don't let me in."

"You wouldn't."

"Oh I would. In public, in front of all these people. I'm gonna sing real loud and I'm gonna sing a song specifically for you. I'm even gonna use your name in it." There was silence for a moment before the shuffling of feet could be heard and the door was cracked open. Percy remained unnerved by the glare his boyfriend was currently giving him, grinning at the shorter boy instead.

"What?"

"I'm sorry," Percy said, kicked-puppy eyes pointed right at Nico. The son of Hades rolled his eyes.

"That's not going to work on me, Perseus."

"Then what about this?" The older boy presented the object he'd snatched off his dresser, which was a piece of paper that read "One McDonald's Date with Your Dumb Boyfriend" in blue marker. Nico took the paper and snorted, recognizing Percy's handwriting.

"What exactly is this?"

"It's a coupon for a McDonald's date, my treat. I've been saving it for when I did something stupid."

"When can I cash this in?"

"Whenever you want."

"No small print?"

"Nope." Nico narrowed his eyes at the taller boy before sighing.

"Alright, fine. You're forgiven. Now get in here and be my pillow," he said, stepping aside to let Percy in. The highly revered Hero of Olympus wagged his eyebrows and smirked down at Nico.

"Your hump pillow?" Nico smacked him on the arm.

"Shut up!"

Even at 5:30 AM in the nastiest blizzard he had seen since living in Maine, the Battery Park Plaza Starbucks was packed.

It never ceased to amaze Nico how busy New York City was. Even at 5:30 AM in the nastiest blizzard he had seen since living in Maine, the Battery Park Plaza Starbucks was packed. The line barely stayed inside the doors and was filled with everything from a businesswoman near the front squawking into an earpiece to a dry-heaving, very hungover NYU student just in from the cold to an old man at the counter who just couldn't make up his mind.

Nico stood in line a few people behind the old man, reading the selection of drinks over and over to himself. He did this partly to be sure of what he wanted before he got to the counter and partly to avoid looking at his companion. Even though Percy Jackson was currently his closest and oldest friend, Nico still couldn't help but feel awkward around the tall young man. He had spent the previous night at Percy's house because the 6-months single Percy couldn't stand to be alone in his apartment. The young man had insisted on taking Nico to get some Starbucks when the son of Hades had woken up screaming at 4 AM from nightmares of Tartarus. Nico would have been fine with the Starbucks just around the corner from the apartment but Percy had whined and whined that Battery Park Plaza was the best one. The shorter demigod was torn from his thoughts when the businesswoman turned from squawking into her phone to squawking at the ever-struggling old man.

"Would you hurry it up? I have places to be!" her New Jersey accent was almost as atrocious as the clown-reminiscent makeup caked onto her face. Before Percy could even form a scowl, Nico had whipped around and shouted back at her.

"How about you back off?" the younger boy had an edge to his voice that made Percy think it could have been Hades himself speaking. Apparently the woman caught the edge as well because she elected to glare at her smart phone instead of respond. Nico scoffed then sent a gentle smile to the old man who had finally ordered and was now taking a seat to await his coffee. "Sorry about...making a scene," he said quietly as they stepped forward a spot. Percy rolled his eyes.

"Are you kidding? You sticking up for an old man isn't 'making a scene', Nico. I didn't know you had it in you."

"Shut up."

"You're such a softie, Nicky."

"Don't you dare call me that," Nico gave his companion a half-hearted glare as butterflies erupted in his stomach at the nickname. Those damn emotions of his threatened to destroy the I Don't Care persona he'd spent so long trying to build.

Their banter was interrupted when they at last came to the counter. The barista smiled warmly, albeit a little tiredly, at them before welcoming them to Starbucks and asking for their orders. Nico looked up at Percy, about to tell him to go first when the taller boy beat him to the punch. But after all the time he'd spent memorizing what he was going to order, Nico froze. The confidence he'd just shown when shouting at that woman was gone and he could almost feel the impatience of the people behind him as he floundered to remember what he wanted. As his heart rate spiked, Percy swept in and saved him.

"We'll take two hot chocolates with whipped cream," the older demigod answered before shooting an odd look at the quickly defrosting Italian. Nico wasn't quite sure what the look meant but there was definitely an excess of warmth in those green eyes along with something else that he couldn't quite pin down. Percy paid then grabbed Nico's hand and headed over to a table by the windows. The shorter of the two tried to slip out of his grasp to sit down but Percy refused to let him.

"Perce, let go," Nico said, trying again. Instead of letting him go, Percy just stood there and stared at him with a goofy smile on his face. "What? What are you looking at?"

"Nothin'," he said, letting Nico go. The son of Hades rolled his eyes and sat down just as one of the baristas called out their order. Percy quickly moved across the room and grabbed both cups off the counter. He took the seat across from Nico and handed the younger boy his hot chocolate. As Nico's hand wrapped around it, he remembered that he was going to order a Peppermint Mocha. 'Too little, too late,' he thought before taking an experimental sip of what he found to be a far too hot drink. Percy didn't seem to believe in experimental sips as he gulped down a few mouthfuls before realizing just how hot his hot chocolate was. Nico laughed loudly at the pained expression on his companion's face. "Don't laugh! I'm suffering!"

"It's your own fault."

"How was I supposed to know it was so hot?" Nico chuckled and reached a hand across the table to point at the small warning on Percy's cup.

"You can read, right?"

"Shut up," Percy said, quickly seizing Nico's hand in his own.

"What are you doing?" The Ghost King asked, raising an eyebrow in question only for Percy to laugh and give him the odd look again. There was silence for a moment (one which felt horribly awkward to Nico) before Percy spoke up.

"You know that this is a date right?"

"What? A-Are you serious?"

"Did I not make it obvious enough?"

"Clearly not!" Then, in what seemed like an attempt to make Nico's face even redder than it already was, Percy leaned across the table and planted a soft kiss on Nico's lips.

"How about now?"

"Better."
