The queen honors those that pass their rite, and their sacrifices by letting them mark her with the blood and she them. 

What if there's monks that speak for the moon and consider the queen a body of the moon? Because she has to be fearless, guide her people when all things are dark and empty. And that the stars are the spirits of those that have passed. 

so during blood moons, each dark elf marks the queen with streak of blood. and they sing songs of the ages and make music to the moon

what if the queen has to sacrifice someone she cares for
