About last night...I attended a screening at #Newark Express in the Hahne's building of "In the Morning", a movie directed by Newark native Nefertite Nguvu capturing a day in the life of several relationships in transition. It has been screened from New York to South Africa and is available on Vimeo and Amazon. The making of the movie was funded via Kickstarter and other private sources, called a "community baby" by Ms. Nguvu, which of course made it incredibly personal and inspiring. The movie: If you know me, you know I haven't watched a movie in a theater setting in years sitting down (I can't stay awake!). Not only did this movie keep me awake, but gave me "the feels"! LOL. The characters were engaging, the dialogue rich and the imagery indulgent and beautiful; the scenes had a rhythm and flow born of a visual artist. You could touch the stories as they were real, visceral. Beyond the stories, everyone seemed to identify with at least one character in the movie. Although I most identified with the character, Harper, whom many perceived as running from or searching for something, and I accurately anticipated (before hearing the words) her dialogue would include reference to valuing freedom, I realized I have already been more than one woman in my 40 years. She referenced defining love as being loved in your most raw, naked form, I.e., as you are, which resonated. A friend told me he knew which character I would identify with and though I'm far from as fabulous as she, I knew who he meant as soon as Harper stepped on the scene. I suspect the beautiful dialogue is something many of us don't imagine ourselves saying, and yet we likely THINK it and don't have the opportunity or the communication skills to do so. It was beautiful to see that interpreted through the Pan-African culture of the characters. I rarely buy movies or watch them twice, but I will gladly add this to my tiny collection as it's the kind of movie I suspect will have hidden gems when seen again. I truly liked this movie. #inthemorning #nefertitenguvu #timewellspent #howcountrygirlsgetdown

"Investing in yourself as an artist is incredibly empowering.
