chapter 21 : there's no way nothing will happen
I don’t have the answers. Only you do. Deep within your soul, there is a question that cries out, begging to be solved. What is the question? No-one knows. There are only pictures.
ALSO on the topic of Neider and his shiny new clusterfuck of a wiki page. So I know most of us have a new favorite scene we want to see animated pretty much every other day, and that’s what happened to me while writing his article. I have three new scenes I must see animated at all cost:
Neider’s lucid dream sequence in 1935-B because that shit is genuinely messed up (if done right Goose could be infinitely sinister, Sonja on the swing pretty freaking creepy, and the two trains barrelling towards each other imposing as hell) and I was imagining it in my head and it is practically BEGGING to be animated
The scene at the harbor in 1935-C when all of Liza/’sHilton’s birds are perched atop buildings and power lines and flying in the sky and ALL OF THEM ARE STARING AT NEIDER with murderous intent. Yes please. What an atmosphere (also the scene in which that one bird is staring at Neider through the window)
That scene in 1935-A in which Melvi gets jackpot on all the slot machines in Firo’s casino. All the lights, and all the different cacophonous jingles flashing/ringing at the same time would be a real unnerving audiovisual experience (especially contrasted with Melvi’s face)
Honorable mentions to:
When Neider threatens Upham with a fork and then Smith points a gun at Neider and then Alkins smashes a bottle across Neider’s face
Ladd on the roof of the car having punched through the roof with his metal hand and pulling Neider up with the other
Obviously I realize that by tomorrow I’ll probably be back to vocally silently suffering over my most favorite of favorite scenes never being animated, but I felt like I had to point the above ones out as being 10/10 animation worthy scenes. Especially that dream sequence.

Baccano: 1935 C- The Grateful Bet: Chapter 22: Or Maybe There Is
(This image is actually back from 1935 A, but I needed a picture of Neider because this is a very Neider-centric chapter. Sadly there aren’t many pictures of him out there)
This was a shorter chapter, but still interesting especially since it featured Neider who has worked his way into becoming a favorite of mine in the Baccano universe during this 1935 time arc. Just think in his first introduction he was just shown as a traitor and was supposedly killed off immediately and now I just want his redemption so bad and for him to be the hero that Sonja believes he is. I’m rooting for you Neider!
So things start getting in motion in this chapter, but only sorta. Neider meets up with either pamela or lana, I’m not sure which (it’s the one who has a history of being a professional gambler. I feel bad that I can’t remember which of those two characters had that background, but I really can’t without looking back right now). Unfortunately before she can bring him to meet with Sonja shit breaks loose as Leeza and Chane decide now would be a good time to try to kill him. He survives though thanks to some help.
But really one of the most interesting things about this chapter to me is the title. Before chapter 22, every single chapter in the 1935 storyline had a negative in it’s title. They began with phrases like “This doesn’t happen,” “This won’t happen,” “This never happens,” etc. I don’t want to rename every single title, but I remember this fact well because I have been writing out the titles in all my posts. This is the first one that changes that pattern for the 1935 story arc and it’s titled “Or Maybe There Is” showing that there may yet be some hope in this storyline which had a lot of schemes and negative events going on that kept the villains of the arc in power. This chapter seems to hint that from here on out things are going to take a turn and that excites me.
