Why, of course!
((I hope you guys like long answers ‘cause I can’t seem to pick just one character for each question. I’m a rebel. :P))
1. First character to fall in love with.
Gaignun Kukai Jr. He’s just so charismatic; the type of character who was meant to be loved by the audience. I’ve said much about this guy in the Xenosaga Challenge thing (Day 1). I don’t think I need to elaborate any more here.
2. [SKIP IF YOU DON’T WANT SPOILERS.] Character I never expected to love as much as I do now.
Shion Uzuki. I never hated her, I just wasn’t able to love her character as much. I didn’t get to play the games sequentially, so I first knew her as this independent woman who’s been through a lot. But then I played XS1, and seeing her being so adorkable and a bit absent-minded… it was just different from XS3 Shion. And, you know, after learning more about her I just fell in love with how she developed through the games.
I think I really admired her when I found out that KOS-MOS killed Kevin (and practically everyone else too). And yet she still treats KOS-MOS like she’s the most precious thing – person, even – in the world. And well, yeah, she’s been through a lot so cut her some slack Shion haters. She’s a likeable character too, you know.
Also Allen. He’s always being overshadowed by Shion’s memories of Kevin for three games, and I kinda pitied him for that. He can’t make a move because: a.) he’s not brave enough; b.) he knows he won’t get the girl anyway what with her still being sentimental about a dead lover. So why bother? But towards the end, he manned up and stood up for himself (well, for Shion technically). I’m proud of Allen for doing that. It’s like watching your baby grow up. /sheds a tear
If I had played the games sequentially, I would also add Juli Mizrahi. I was put off to see her so apathetic towards MOMO in XS1 when she had come to terms with that in XS3. It’s kinda nice to see her gradually warm up to MOMO, and I understand why she was the way she was in XS1.
3. Character everyone loves but I don’t.
I don’t really know. Probably chaos? I don’t hate him though; I just don’t know him that well compared to the other characters, so there’s really very little to like about him. I’ve heard a rumor that the last three episodes, had they not been cut out, were supposed to be about him and KOS-MOS. I’m not sure if that was true, but I guess that’s the reason why the games don’t touch up on him much despite his BIG BIG BIG ROLE in the game.
Maybe if I got to know him more, I’d like him as much. I think part of the reason people like him is because of the mystery (which, ironically, was what made me not like him as much). He’s still pretty cool though, all things considered.
4. Character everyone hates but I don’t.
Can’t pick one between Kevin Winnicot and Dmitri Yuriev, so I’ll say both of them. Yes, I know they’re jerks. Yes, I know they’re manipulative bastards and horrible people. I still like them. Especially Dmitri. I think he’s a good antagonist, and I think he’s pretty awesome for having done so much when he’s not even in cahoots with Wilhelm. That’s really saying something. And, okay, maybe I find his voice (and looks) in XS3 to be totally hot.
If I had played the games sequentially, I would probably add MOMO to the list just because the first game made her so loli, and her only defining aspect at that time was being cute and needing to be rescued. I’ve ranted about her character and why I like her in XS3 in the Xenosaga Challenge though (Day 16 I think?), so no need for me to elaborate. Except that I just want to reiterate: I thought she was very elegant in the third game. Feel free to disagree with me.
I guess Shion counts too since a lot of people don’t like her.
5. Character I used to love but not anymore.
Maybe Nephilim? I liked her initialy because she was the creepy angelic looking kid who talks about cryptic stuff, and I kinda have a soft spot for those kinds of characters. But then that became the only thing I know about her so… yeah. It’s almost like her only defining aspect (I’ve been using this phrase more often; I’m not sure, but I think the appropriate term is flanderization?), although I could be wrong since I don’t really know her.
I don’t hate her though; I just don’t like her as much anymore. Just like chaos, I just wish I knew more about her. I guess chaos counts too since I was also attracted to his mysterious presence, but I never found the answers. His VAs could also be a factor. His VA in XS1 was okay, but Joshua Seth was better for his character.
That scene where they’re talking on top of the city and commenting on humanity was one of my favorites though. <3
6. Character I would totally smooch.
Gaignun! <3 I look up to him like he’s some celebrity. He’s so posh and attractive and stuff.
Shion would be smooched too.
Jr.? Hm, if only he didn’t look so young… although I wouldn’t actually mind since we all know he’s not really that young XD.
7. Character I want to be like.
Gaignun? Like I said, I look up to him like he’s some kind of celebrity. Posh, formal, attractive, and he even gets the girls! Seeing how successful the Kukai Foundation is (and how they were able to keep the emulators and investigate conspiracies at the same time - although Jr. probably helped with that too), I’d say he’s a pretty good leader. He’s a pretty charismatic leader. But more importantly, I think he’s good at dealing with most of the shit life throws at him.
It’s a shame things didn’t work out for him, but I suppose it was for the best.
8. Character I want to slap.
Kevin and Dmitri were assholes. Do I even need to explain this?
I should probably slap Wilhelm, but I’m still awed at how he keeps trolling the characters – the whole universe even – for who knows how long. How many times has he implemented his plans now? And it’s pretty arguable if what he had been doing was downright evil. I don’t think he was disappointed with how thinks turned out in the end anyway.
9. Pairing I love.
I don’t actually actively ship anyone in the Xeno games. I’ve read some fics, but I still don’t really, you know, ship them. The game doesn’t need the romance (except, arguably, Shion’s). But I guess I don’t mind Shion/KOS-MOS, Shion/Allen, Ziggy/Juli.
To be more creative: Jr./chaos (idk why), Nigredo/Citrine (not necessarily romantic, but I can see them having to hang out because the twins made them feel left out, and they were both born for Dmitri’s personal whims), and all permutations of the URTV ships (this is where I blame fanfics).
10. Pairing I despise don’t get.
chaos/KOS-MOS. It doesn’t work in my head at all, sorry. It’s an aesthetically beautiful pair though.
I think Jr./MOMO is cute, but I can’t get myself to really ship them. I don’t know why. I just think they’re still in this puppy love stage (yes, I know Jr. isn’t that young, but you know he doesn’t really act his own age that much anyway) so I can’t take their in-game possible romance that seriously. It’s also possible that Jr. only likes MOMO because of Sakura (I don’t think this is necessarily true, but the possibility is there). Cute though.
I’ve read a Shion/Jr. oneshot that I really like, but I still don’t ship them. That oneshot is still one of my favorites though.
