Neris Fanfic Rec #4: The Man With The Fox Tattoo

Happy Saturday once again, Neris Nation, it's great to see you all! (And happy 4th of July to those who celebrate!)

On deck today is modern AU, The Man With The Fox Tattoo, by a most excellent-and-deserving-of-your-praise author, @holdmyduffelbag, who also wrote Twin Flames (another epic Neris fic you should absolutely check out if you have not yet done so!).

Fic summary:

Nesta Archeron, suspended for “unjustified vigilante action”, will do anything to prove that Beron Vanserra is guilty. Fortunately, Beron’s oldest son just so happens to run a tattoo studio across from her sister’s struggling flower shop. A perfect spot for some undercover surveillance work.

Eris Vanserra, well aware of his father’s illegal dealings, will do anything to stay out of Beron’s line of fire. Unfortunately, he takes one look at his neighbor’s new assistant and finds himself utterly fascinated, even though he knows she’s not who she pretends to be. A perfect opportunity to make both their lives difficult.

This one, friends, has everything: intrigue, crime, obsessive Nesta, Eris covered in tattoos (yes please?!)... is it getting hot in here? (We couldn't resist the pun!)

Because it's such a unique take on modern Neris, though, we obviously asked @holdmyduffelbag what inspired this piece, which was written for last year's holiday gift exchange. Her answer? Short and sweet: "I asked my giftee for a list of tropes she likes, to choose from for inspiration. And then I used that list as a checklist instead."

She also said during our very short (and informal interview) that it's one of her favorite fics, and honestly? It's one of ours too. So get on out there to AO3 to read this absolute gem, and check in with us next week, same Neris time, same Neris channel.

Neris Fanfic Rec #3: Hull of a Love Story

Happy Saturday, Neris Nation! Let's pretend we posted this on Friday! Today, we have an excellent, unique AU for you all to love and peruse: Hull of a Love Story, by one of the OG Nerises herself, author of the classic 'With a Sense of Poise and Rationality', the fabulous @kateprincessofbluewhales!

Fic summary:

Young Eris Vanserra heads home from university to his father's family seat to take up the formidable responsibility of being the heir of the Comte de la Forêt. But perhaps, one small adventure beforehand wouldn't hurt. Right?

“You don’t belong here, do you?” She was pretty. Her face was blood streaked and sunburned, but she had a classically lovely face.

“No, ma’am.” he said, his voice cracking.

She tilted his hat back with the nose of her pistol to get a good look at his face. “Not a freckle on you, you sweet thing. How long have you been out here?” She dragged the tip down his cheek.

He gulped.

“This is my second day, ma’am.”

She laughed, low and husky. “Oh my. What bad luck you have. I'm thinking I could take you to ransom. You look like you’ve got a rich daddy, don’t you?” she asked. He nodded.

Before he was passed off, she touched his chin with her fingers, till he met her eyes, “Welcome aboard The Ataraxia.”

Because we're incurably nosy, we sat @kateprincessofbluewhales down to ask her what inspired this work - here's what she had to say:

"It really came about very organically. Nesta the treasure hunter in ACOSF, but she gets to keep it for herself and becomes the pirate captain of her ship, with an all-women crew. Maybe she kidnaps a posh ginger prince along the way, making Eris the helpless maiden. Lesbians. The bats are involved as wealthy guano traders (lolol). What's not to like? 😄😄"

Neris Fanfic Rec #2: Ripple

Hi again, Neris Nation! We hope you enjoyed last week's first ever Neris Featured Fic Showcase, and we come to you today bearing another excellent offering: Ripple, by the talented and gorgeous @chelseamorninggirl herself!

Fic summary:

Cassian looks at her, searching for something in her face, but she won’t turn. Won’t let him see the hollowness inside. The quiet roar of thoughts that have been spiraling again, louder with every passing hour.

“You can hate me,” he says after a long moment. “You can scream at me, Nesta. You can blame me. I deserve it. Just… say something. Just don’t give up.”

She lets out a soft laugh. It’s empty and sharp, like breaking glass. “Maybe I already did. Maybe you all just caught on too late.”

After Nesta reveals the truth of Feyre’s pregnancy and faces Rhysand’s wrath, Cassian whisks her away to the Illyrian mountains. But there is no breakthrough. No healing. Only silence, grief, and a descent into darkness that Cassian is too late to stop.

What happens on the hike sets off a chain of consequences no one is ready for. Broken in body and mind, Nesta must confront not only the ghosts that have always haunted her, but the ones who claimed to love her.

We took the opportunity, of course, to ask @chelseamorninggirl what inspired this work - especially since Neris isn't usually a ship she reaches for! Here's what she had to say: "Ripple was/is my first foray into canon divergent Neris, after writing many Nessian fix-it, canon divergent and alternative universe fics. It all started with a strong urge to write a fix-it fic for The Hike, one of the truly irredeemable moments for Cassian in my opinion. I wanted to give Nesta her healing journey outside of the Night Court, as well as dive into the way the Autumn Court plays a role in Briallyn and Koschei’s plot to overtake Prythian. It allowed for an exploration of canon, and an extension of its worldbuilding. It grew into an epic, which also allowed me to explore Emerie and Nuan, a badass but underdeveloped character, as well as give Emerie her own healing journey. Nesta and Eris have a special kind of chemistry. They’re two sides of the same coin. Oldest siblings, both self-sacrificing to a fault, with a strong urge to protect their own with a fiery fierceness. Eris knew the second Nesta stood up against Beron during the High Lords’ meeting in Dawn that she was something special, and I wanted to dive into what he sees in her, recognizes in her. Why her flame calls to his and how like calls to like. There’s so much more in store for this, and it will have all our favorite tropes of strangers to lovers, hurt/comfort, whump, Eris teaching Nesta about her magic, and epic fight scenes."

Neris Fanfic Rec #1: The Price of the Ticket

Greetings, Neris Nation, and welcome to our first ever Neris Week Featured Fic Showcase, where we will highlight some of the finest pieces of Neris fanfiction one can find on AO3!

There's a twist, though: we wanted to deviate away from the old fan favorites this year to shine the spotlight on fics - short and long, finished and still in progress - that you may or may not have seen before. Fic summary:

If Eris couldn’t orchestrate the downfall of an airline, he’d settle for a drink, or a fuck. Whatever he could find first. With only a laptop bag, tomorrow’s suit, and a foul mood to his name, he set to reach the concierge.

Instead he found a pair of legs. A pair of perfect legs adorned in sheer black tights and very high heels, belonging to incandescent rage in a mini dress of mauve silk.

At Lucien and Elain’s wedding, Nesta finds herself without a room, and Eris finds himself without his suitcase.

We wanted to learn a little more about what inspired this absolute masterpiece, so we reached out to the @macneiceisms, who served us the tea:

"Truthfully, this fic was born during a very sleepless night at home for the holidays, while working on a canon universe Neris fic that's still too rough to go anywhere. I’d also recently reread a fic i loved from another fandom, and i was just seized with the idea of Eris and Nesta as two jetsetting workaholics coming together during a wedding. Slow burn, except they’re having sex the whole time. A chance to shamelessly trawl the seabed of useless things I know and write with a completely different tone than I usually go for. It’s been a lovely challenge and it’s been so so so much fun."
