The “Bilbao Effect”
On a boat ride down the Nervion River, I spotted this abandoned and derelict building that was once owned by a company called Talleres de Zorroza in 1871. A stack reminder of the economic decline that must have overcome the city before the Guggenheim Museum was built in 1997, which transformed the image of the city to what we know it to today. (The so-called “Bilbao Effect). I couldn’t help but wonder what will become of this amazing building, so full of character and I imagine, full of stories and memories of the people that once made their livelihood from it.
For me, the building encapsulates the entire story of Bilbao, from the period before the Guggenheim to the present day.
