His dark materials HBO adaptation
I adore the books. I have faith this will be a nice adaptation but I don't think I'll be able to get into it.
While the movie did many things wrong, I truly do think it got one thing right: the cast. I might be completely wrong here since it's only a trailer, but this cast for me lacks what the movie one did. I don't remember all the actor's names so please bear with me.
Kidman had this seductive, powerful and wicked air to her that just IS Mrs Coulter. I do like Wilson's acting a lot but she doesn't really entice or "seduce" the viewer I feel.
Lyra's old actress had this fire in her look and she was... fierce. She had a cunning air to her. This is one of the main things that make Lyra herself. This actress doesn't give me the same feeling at all. I also can't picture her as anything but dirty blonde, as the books described her. But I suppose that's a minor thing.
Daniel Craig emanated power, which I feel McAvoy doesn't. Being powerful to the point of intimidating others is a big part of Asriel's character. To me he seems more like a desperate man here. Something Asriel would never strike you as.
On the topic of more minor characters, I don't know who will be acting as Seraphina Pekkala, but Eva Green feels so ethereal as well as fierce that I can't picture anyone else. I do like Lin Manuel Miranda as Scoresby, though.
It might be that I watch the show and end up changing my mind completely. But for now I'm not into the cast at all so I'll most likely stay away from it.
you know what sucks?
hyperfixating on mike nesmith+the monkees when the fandom fell to pieces several years earlier. and as such there’s not much in the way of new content, since the creators have been driven off.
i feel like i’m sifting through the wreckage of an abandoned house. it was never that big to begin with from what i understand, and it caught fire, or was set on fire deliberately, and burned to the ground. and all those who were involved were burned as well, and don’t want to return in case there is still something smoldering in the ashes. there are a few others with me, searching, planting new seeds, but they are inexperienced. what they build and create and grow is good, but the lack of experience shows. and every once in a while i unearth something, a treasure, and maybe it’s fire damaged but it’s still there. it’s still a tangible remnant. And the old occupants see this, and smile, but they have moved on, to another house with better fire safety systems, so that should an arsonist appear the damage will be minimal, while i stand here in the wreckage with a fire extinguisher, keeping an eye out.
but i don’t know what i’m doing either. I don’t even know if the fire extinguisher works or if it’s actually filled with propane and will end up making everything so much worse if i use it...
I want to see this house rebuilt. Even if I never saw it before the fire, it can be built up again, and people will come, and visit, and craft their own pieces, and they will be happy here for a while, out of the rain and weather, safe from the monsters that lurk outside... Sure, they won’t stay forever, but it’s a place where they can recover, and regain their strength before venturing out again.
this turned into a long metaphor didn’t it...
