the THING about Lord Asriel (from His Dark Materials/Golden Compass) is he's a main character. He's the chosen one/leading the armies of every single world/video game protagonist/man who's going to save everybody.

BUT he's also a kid abandoner. He ditched his daughter. Both of these things are true.

And he's surrounded by the Good guys. Good people. Rebels, witches, other fathers.

So it's SO funny when people come rushing to him and are like um hey?? There's a magical girl out there and everyone is trying to kill her should we do something??

And all of the other good guys are like whoa of course right, that's what we do, Lord Asriel has risked his life for me, a STRANGER, he would do anything for the people around him- surely he'll save this girl and they get to watch him go urrrrrrk.

He's ANNOYED. He rolls his eyes.

And they're like ??????? Who is this girl????

And he's like it's whatever it's my daughter.

And they're like your WHAT!?

It's so funny that he thinks it's not even a faux pas. He thinks these people (people he collected because they ARE GOOD they are Caring, Loving people) would not be disturbed at all by that. He doesn't even see it as a character flaw he's just like yeah the church has a nuke to murder my kid- I don't give a shit- now back to saving children because I am a good and noble man who must save all children- it's CRAZY. There is a schism in his mind, in his character it's so compelling.

It's like you're watching transformers and Optimus Prime out of nowhere says yeah guess I got a kid and I abandoned them- and the mother is Megatron and megatron is actually a Better parent then me. Anyways I won't answer anymore questions about it, let's go team-

like! imagine the love rectangle Helena/Hermia/Demetrius/Lysander if you add all their daemons and those daemons fall in love with the wrong daemons because love potion went wrong and Puck can't breathe because he's laughing too hard

like. Titania doesn't fall in love with the mortal but with his donkey daemon. She doesn't care for the guy, who just needs to hang around while the queen of fairies serenades the very confused part of his soul that's shaped like a donkey.

and that's just Midsummer Night's dream!

I'm not even gonna get into Twelfth’s Night. The love triangle Orsino/Viola/Olivia is now an hexagon.

John Parry/Jopari/Stanislaus Grumman is truly the character of all time.

Gets hired as basically glorified muscle for a science research expedition.

Accidentally walks into another world during a blizzard, where his travel companions promptly got spiritually lobotomised by mystery ghosts in front of him.

Managed to get to a second new universe, met his daemon and at the same time managed to get her to separate in a way that most of this new world doesn't know or understand as being possible.

Immediately rocks up to a university with a paper so good they ask no further questions about who the fuck he is and where he came from, just start throwing money at him to go do more research.

Finds out this new world has literal actual real magic and dedicates himself to learning it.

Finds a plant that can heal basically any flesh wound and goes "okay... I obviously i need to find a way to make that into a medical cream".

Gets his head trepanned because he, when in Rome I guess.

Refused the love of a witch because he still loved his wife and kid back home even though he knew he would almost certainly never see them again.

Also literally everyone who has ever met him has a different story of how he has horrifically died.

Is well known enough that Asriel lied about finding his decapitated head, maybe because he just hasn't faked his death enough times already i guess?

Knows a whole bunch of magic, including summoning a person he's never met with a ring, controlling the weather, him and his daemon summoning all the birds in a forest to attack a zeppelin (even to the point of suicide for some of the birds) but also knows... sometimes ya just gotta use matches to start a fire.

Like yeah he was a twat for going back on his promise to Lee, but he lucked out that Will was already down bad for Lyra. But all other things considered, bad ass mother fucker, no one else is doing it like him.

His Dark Materials character with an it/its agender daemon and the human eventually coming out as genderfluid. All the gender went to the one side

If we’re going by the “your daemon is your complement” and “sexuality influences the gender of your daemon” concepts I think the queer scene in HDM would be wild. Daemons who come out as transgender with their person, daemons who don’t but feel the same joy, polycules where your daemons are active participants with their own relationships almost independent to you, a ridiculous amount of daemons settling at Pride events, the alethiometer college class being filled by strong-willed, confident people who know themselves so much and have the grace to openly view a mysterious yet playful truth… queer daemons!!!
