The thing with the live action ATLA is that it’s fine to not include the sexism for Sokka thing if you don’t have the time for it. It’s an adaptation, it does not have to be include everything, you can still have conflict and flaws for Sokka without the sexism.

But we know the Kyoshi Warriors are going to be in it and Suki is a fairly major character. Her mum has been cast. So we can expect to see some time spent with these characters. So it doesn’t appear to be a pacing thing. And it’s like they’re announcing to the world we’ll see the Kyoshi warriors but now with even less conflict? Huh? They proudly announce that the sexism is gone, despite the fact it was character growth. They’re removing the rough edges from a children’s show for a supposedly more mature adapatation for what????

Someone said there was a bunch of wank over the live action ATLA and I was not disappointed. <3 I can't wait for this bomb to drop. >:D

Interesting that the Netflix Airbender show has scenes of the genocide in the show. Now this is personal preference but I never did feel like the tone of the show really meshed well with a genocide; it’s such an extreme event to have as a backstory and I often felt like the show breezed past it or handled it only when they could in certain scenes and then ignored it for the rest of the story. It’s just one of those things if I think about for Aang and the people who died it’s too horrible to linger on. It is such an important component to the series but

Netflix ATLA could be unshackled from the restraints of being a ‘kids network’ (and ATLA I feel is important to examine by the context that it’s a kids show on a kids network). So it could show more history and more depth to the genocide.

I don’t want dark and angsty ATLA, I still want the humour and sense of adventure, but I wouldn’t be mad at a show that gave more time to develop some of the darker themes and plot elements. So more develop what is already there then create new darkness

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with changing the relationship between Sokka and his father with Hadoka being disappointed in Sokka. Giving more conflict is fine, this is a different adaptation so changes are fine if it pays off.

However Hadoka leaves Sokka in charge despite also thinking he’s incompetent? Okay???? Weird choice? Hadoka looks a bit stupid now? Like they could leave one warrior behind lol.

the reason why the sexism plot is good for Sokka and the show is that

a) conflict is interesting

b) sexism is bad and with little boys watching andrew tate maybe we can remind ppl of that

c) It shows Sokka's flaws and also his strengths. It shows that he's a sexist idiot but it shows that he was always ready to move past it. He drops the sexism to learn from Suki because he recognises shes a great warrior. You know what is more important than pride to Sokka? Leading and protecting his new friend and sister, and his tribe. So he eats the humble pie and learns from the woman warrior. He was always a good boy, he was just immature. But the sexism plot highlights what makes Sokka Sokka. Sexism is a byproduct of Sokka's immaturity, and him being put into this protector position (in that he was the oldest boy and told to protect people. that's going to give you some weird expectations) that really shouldn't be asked of him in the first place but the world is at war and it's fucking up these kids. It's a good mini character arc, showcases future development of Sokka becoming a leader and also expands the world.

I think the Netflix Avatar is missing scenes where the characters just talk to each other. Like what if we saw Aang ask Sokka and Katara if they are okay after being in the fog of lost souls. And then they say 'well it wasn't great' ' but we're okay Aang :)' but really they're not. some kind of acknowledgement discussion of emotions, connection making please. Like Sokka and Katara go through all of that, and they don't acknowledge it with anyone else. Their arcs are finished with Pakku and Yue. It's all internal or with new characters. Please voice your issues to your friends and familiy.

Okay so I watched a TikTok where a ‘Netflix insider’ said that the reason Bryke left Netla is that they were uninterested in remaking the original scene by scene and wanted to make drastic changes and make something new. I’m taking this TikTok with a massive grain of salt as it’s very unsourced.

Honestly I could buy this, since the final version of the show we got stays pretty close to the cartoon. There is nothing particularly objectionable in the show so far, it just feels subtly bad.

Now I am pretty uninterested in an adaptation with major changes to the characters as the characters are pretty much perfect in my eyes. However I wonder if Bryke wanted to make a version that was closer to the tech-punk vision they came up with first. With robots and stuff. Like with their tastes in the Legend of Korra i wouldn’t be surprised.

I can imagine Bryke saying ‘okay let’s do something weird’ and Netflix said ‘no we want an accurate adaptation the fans will like. We’re not here to be weird and artistic.’

I’m not saying their version would be good but it’d be interesting to see

I will say there isn’t anything wrong with the NETLA remake showing Ozai as ATLA really built up him by shrouding him in smoke and shadow and then revealing him to be just some guy. Like yeah dang that’s a guy who’s fire lord. He looks a little mean I guess. And it’s fine he’s some guy but why was his face so secretive.
