Incidente en servicios de correo

El pasado 21 de julio entre 5 y 6 de la tarde, la conectividad a los servidores centrales que manejan la autenticación de nuestros servicios de correo empezó a sufrir interrupciones. El problema creció hasta desconectar totalmente varios de nuestros equipos, dejando a muchos usuarios sin servicio de correo por un lapso de una hora aproximadamente. La causa de aquel incidente fue un problema con un switch en el datacenter que conecta nuestra red a Internet.

El día de ayer, la red donde están instalados nuestros servidores volvió a sufrir un problema similar. La diferencia fue que esta vez afectó a la totalidad de nuestros clientes, dejándonos (incluido todo uServers) sin servicios de correo durante 2 horas. La razón que recibimos en esta ocasión fue una "falla en el motor de ruteo de la red".

Debido a la magnitud del problema nuestras líneas de soporte estuvieron saturadas durante casi todo el día. Continuamente estuvimos actualizando el estado del problema mediante la cuenta de twitter de Operaciones uServers (@uServersOPS), que se convirtió en la única forma de comunicarnos eficientemente con ustedes.

uServers invierte la mayoría de sus recursos en una base tecnológica que incorpora una redundancia sólida en todos sus componentes (almacenamiento de datos, servidores de cada tipo de aplicación, puntos de entrada y salida, etc). Desafortunadamente toda esta duplicidad fue inútil cuando la conexión hacia el exterior falló por un problema totalmente fuera de nuestro control.

Como empresa de servicios que somos, simplemente no podemos depender de una red que no esté al mismo nivel de confiabilidad que nuestras aplicaciones. Por esto, desde el día de ayer, hemos iniciado la migración de todos nuestros servicios a nuevo proveedor de conectividad. Nuestro nuevo aliado tecnológico es ampliamente conocido por su gran infraestructura y estabilidad. La nueva red nos ofrece múltiples salidas geográficamente dispersas, las rutas más eficientes de Internet y la capacidad de ampliar sobre demanda la base tecnológica de nuestros servicios y los recursos de red.

El cambio será totalmente transparente para todos ustedes. Al momento de escribir esto, tenemos ya un 60% de nuestros servicios sobre la nueva infraestructura y estamos moviendo gradualmente el resto, ampliando las bases conforme la demanda crece. Esperamos tener la migración completa para el 1 de agosto del 2014.

Queremos agradecer a todos nuestros usuarios la solidaridad que han mostrado con nosotros durante este tiempo tan difícil. Es sumamente importante para nosotros que estén conscientes que estamos dedicados día y noche a imprimir una alta calidad en lo que hacemos. Sobre el problema de red

El día de hoy, algunos de nuestros servicios fueron impactados por un problema de red en la infraestructura de uno de nuestros proveedores. Este problema afectó a la mayoría de nuestros usuarios y, aunque no fue un problema en nuestros equipos o software, aquí explicamos las medidas que tomamos para lograr evadirlo.

El 21 de julio del 2014, alrededor de las 17:20 CDT empezamos a recibir reportes de usuarios que tenía dificultades para acceder a sus cuentas de correo. Los reportes escalaron rápidamente hasta saturar todos nuestros canales de cmunicación: teléfono, mail e incluso nuestras cuentas de redes sociales.

Tras una investigación a fondo, nos percatamos que desde las 17:10 CDT, uno de nuestros proveedores de red dejó a algunas de nuestras redes sin conexión con los principales proveedores de Internet de México. Varios servidores de diversos roles fueron afectados, pero los más graves y delicados fueron algunos de los nodos del cluster de datos que maneja las cuentas de correo. Esto causó que el problema fuera generalizado.

Para las 17:30 CDT, ya teníamos identificado el problema y ubicadas las redes afectadas y de inmediato procedimos a sacar de la rotación de servicio los servidores conectados a esas redes. Todos los servicios de correo de uServers corren en infraestructura redundante por lo que recaimos en los servidores que no fueron afectados por el problema.

El TTL (time to live) de los registros de DNS de servicio que manejamos en uServers es de 15 minutos y rara vez son modificados, excepto en situaciones severas, como esta. Hacia las 17:50 CDT los intentos de conexión hacia las redes afectadas empezaron a bajar notablemente. Paulatinamente  los servicios empezaron a funcionar normalmente y para las 18:20 ya prácticamente habían cesado los intentos de conexión a las redes afectadas.

A las 19:15 CDT, el problema con nuestro proveedor sigue, pero ya no tenemos reportes de fallas y ya no vemos tráfico ni intentos de conexión a las redes afectadas.  Las acciones que pusimos en marcha lograron evadir el problema exitosamente.

Durante la noche de hoy esperamos que se reestablezcan los servicios de red y regresaremos toda nuestra infraestructura a su configuración normal. Probablemente actualizaremos este post con las medidas que tomemos tras el postmortem del problema.
