The urgency for a new approach to understanding the kind of economy, culture, and society in which we live is heightened by the crises and conflicts that have characterized the first decade of the twenty-first century. The global financial crisis; the upheaval in business and labor markets resulting from a new international division of labor; the unstoppable growth of the global criminal economy; the social and cultural exclusion of large segments of the population of the planet from the global networks that accumulate knowledge, wealth, and power; the backlash of the disaffected in the form of religious fundamentalism; the rekindling of national, ethnic, and territorial cleavages, ushering in the negation of the other, and thus the widespread resort to violence as a way of protest and domination; the environmental crisis epitomized by climate change; the growing incapacity of political institutions based on the nation-state to handle global problems and local demands: these are all diverse expressions of a process of multidimensional, structural change that takes place in the midst of agony and uncertainty. Convergences of technologies and networks, and their political purchase

The cameraphone, social media, Web 2.0, and so forth have converged with amateur content production and a range of performances and practices that both enable and script behaviors in public and as content producers. The convergence of these technologies for cultural production have been referred to as "convergence culture" (Jenkins 2006). Castells  (2000) calls the interconnections among geospatially and culturally dispersed individuals, facilitated by digital networks and communications technologies the "network society."

Diamond characterizes these developments as deeply transformative, particularly for politics.

"Few, if any, developments in recent decades have more profoundly transformed politics and civil society than the emergence of digital information and communication technologies (ICTs). Prominent among these have been the Internet; the sprawling blogosphere that it has spawned; the proliferating array of social-media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr; and the galloping growth in access to these digital media through mobile phones. These electronic tools have provided new, breathtakingly dynamic, and radically decentralized means for people and organizations to communicate and cooperate with one another for political and civic ends" (2011, p. ix)
