About the ADNI’s Study of Brain Aging in Vietnam War Veterans
An imaging contract-research organization, NeuroRx Research has performed centralized, innovative MRI analysis for clinical trials in dozens of countries around the world. A partner in the National Science & Engineering Research Council’s CREATE program, NeuroRx is also a partner with the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). To study and understand issues of brain aging in Vietnam War veterans, the ADNI partnered with the Department of Defense in 2012. Involving over 1,000 participants in the screening interview and half as many in the clinical telephone interview, the study will ultimately include about 300 eligible Vietnam War veterans. At the conclusion of the study, the ADNI hopes to reduce the long-term effects of traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder on veterans suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. During follow-up procedures after the clinical telephone interview, participants have cerebrospinal fluid collected for analysis and undergo MRI and PET scans at ADNI clinics, even if they show signs of mild cognitive impairment or dementia--unless doing so creates participant safety concerns. At the end of the study, participants will be examined for co-morbid diseases, differences in biomarker measurements, and hippocampal atrophy accounting for brain amyloid, among other key factors.
