Sound City (2013)
I’ve been watching “Sonic Highways”, Dave Grohl’s love letter to the music scenes of eight different cities. It’s highly watchable for any fan of his or music in general. Before “Sonic Highways”, Grohl directed "Sound City", which is about the studio of the same name, home of the legendary Neve console. It was really good. Grohl's aim was to answer the questions of how to use digital recording as a tool and not a crutch and how to keep the human element (the feel) in music. Grohl interview many of the key players in the studio's success - including Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham, Trent Reznor, Tom Petty, Butch Vig, Rick Springfield and many others. The studio had it's first big success with the first Fleetwood Mac album to have Nicks and Buckingham. After a lull, the studio regained it's popularity when Nirvana recorded "Nevermind" there. Once the digital age started, the studio's populariy waned before closing for good in 2011. Grohl purchased the Neve console that was such a vital part of the studio and moved it to his own studio. The last 40% or so of the film is Grohl recording with some of the Sound City artists in his studio and using that board. Every up and coming band should watch this movie. Casual music fans probably won't be interested in this film. Serious music people however should love it.
Blackbird Studio Head Technician Richard Ealey, upon whom all things working depends, shows #theblackbirdacademy studio engineering students what's under the hood of a Neve 1066 module.
For those that don't know the story of the Neve console that I was lucky enough to record on at Studio 606, here's a taste of the history. Really recommend checking out the full film.
