Never Nowhere is one of many limited lathe releases on a previously unheard of Orange County, California label - Golly Jane Records. I contacted the label right after listening to Never Nowhere 2 song 7". Jeff Cohen (who is also the guitarist in Never Nowhere and another Golly Jane band, Sunset Swim) said what many others say when asked, what is the label's philosophy:
"The philosophy of the label was/is pretty simple I guess. Just put out records of bands that I like, nothing really more complicated than that. Most of them are artists that I know personally but not all of them. I had wanted to have a record label since the 90’s probably but was too clueless or afraid to start. In 2014 or so, I saw White Town post about a new digital single and I asked if there would be a physical release, Jyoti, who is White Town, said no physical release because it just ends up losing money. But he gave me permission to do a 7” for the song. He warned me that I’d lose lots of money and have trouble selling them. Well, he was right."
And yet, Cohen continued. While he states his label is no longer active, he did recently release a lathe cut of a live track from Sissy Bar - which was how I heard of the label. There are 15 releases to peruse.
Back to Never Nowhere, this is pretty lo-fi and reminds me a bit of The Worrynauts and Woven In (listen to the reverb on the vocals and the melodies). There's also a bit of Dylan Shearer at work here as well.
You say I'm younger than I'll ever be again
But I'm still the oldest that I've ever been
