Bridgette’s ninth birthday was coming up in just a few days and Allison had yet to buy her a present. Between getting off work and stopping at the grocery store for party supplies, somehow she found a little chunk of time to stop at the bookstore. Unlike most kids, Bridgette was thrilled whenever she was gifted with books, which made both her parents very proud. Allison browsed through the kids’ novels, trying to recall the titles and authors that her daughter was fond of, when suddenly a shiver ran up her spine. It felt like cold fingers crawling up her back and on her neck, like a spider. 

She froze up before slowly turning around where she saw a young man several paces back from her. He looked to be a decent and well-kept teenage boy, but as soon as she laid eyes on him, a weight fell upon her shoulders as images flashed through her head. ----A woman’s mouth opening in a scream, a chef’s knife cutting through the air, spatters of red painting a carpet--- The scenes kept repeating in Allson’s mind until she felt sick and she held onto the bookshelf, but the weight of dread grew to be too much to handle. Her knees gave out from under her and she collapsed to the floor, a few books toppled beside her. She managed to keep herself at least partially sitting up, but she hadn’t the energy yet to get back up. All color had visibly drained from her face.

neverallnorman replied: my issue is that it's such a quintessentially japanese story that relies on a lot of factors of japanese society so americanizing it... doesn't work :/

neverallnorman replied: like imagine trying to set breaking bad in the uk. you can't. breaking bad is about the failures of the american health care system. death note is about the huge amount of pressure put on the eldest son of a japanese family and top student in a japanese public school, and how that kind of perfectionist cultural mentality contributed to his decision

neverallnorman replied: also!! i wasn't against the idea of a death note story set in america, i just wanted it to be like, a different story in the same universe. maybe someone AFTER kira's downfall trying to take up the mantle or something. gah. im mad lol

i agree with you so so much and it’s absolutely true. i was reading this article and it’s exactly what you said. death note is such a quintessentially japanese story. i’m gonna quote the article directly bc it phrases it way better than i ever could lol but “death note is a distinctly japanese cultural product in many ways. the presence of japanese shinigami, or death gods, plays a huge role in the plot, as does the clash between traditional japanese values and modern idol worship and pop star culture.”

like that’s exactly it and also your breaking bad comparison is so spot on. breaking bad wouldn’t have fit in the uk setting at all because it’s so focused on the american health care system. it just would have been entirely different and it’s the same with death note. same here too! like i wouldn’t have minded a death note story set in america and if the characters stayed japanese. really what upsets me the most is just the whitewashing and the fact that it changes the original story so much

your idea is so awesome too, like getting to see a different story set after kira’s downfall would have been amazing
