You're the Lord of all creation And still You know my heart The Author of salvation You've Loved me from the start
Never an Afterthought
by Jenny Bladow
"The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. For this is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, 'Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.' The LORD said to me: 'What they say is good. I will raise up from them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account."
Deuteronomy 18:15-19
I had an awful morning and in typical fashion, the awfulness was all of my own making. I like to pretend I have it call together. Oh but I don't - I am broken. I am so flawed. I am forgetful. I am prone to make too much of things that don't have a lasting impact - unfiled papers, less-than-stellar meals, cluttered desks, dirty dishes, clothes left in the washing machine, and the like. Then of course this all feeds into the fact that I am far too often overwhelmed by the expectations I set for myself. I bottle it up and then I have my "moments". Whew. There. I said it. I'm imperfect and I want to be perfect.
And I don't take it all to God nearly enough. It doesn't matter how many times I remind myself to "listen to the prophet", there are so many times I sill manage to make God an afterthought. A convenience. A once-I'm-done-with-my-'moment'-now-I-feel-foolish recourse.
These verses hit on the fact that nothing is an afterthought to God. He connects everything together. Everything is planned. Everything is purposeful. Everything. Everyone. We are never an afterthought. We are His priority. His priority! The entire Bible is filled with evidence that He has us in His heart and on His mind always. Every single second of every single day. Oh praise the Lord that He does not forget me and He is always present!
The same God who created the world, created us. The same God who promised Abraham, promises us His love and grace. The same God who overwhelmed the Israelites with His presence in the fiery cloud at Mt. Sinai, came to this world through His son Jesus - the prophet who speaks in His name - to bring us to Him. He comes to us exactly in the way we need Him to. We are never an afterthought.
