“Very well, thank you. How is your practice?“ Sophronia smiled brightly.
She had never spoken much to Mr. Straussman, Victor’s roommate and assistant. They were often in the same place, but whenever Sophronia visited it was for Victor, and he had a way of holding the focus of a room. How many actual conversations had Sophronia and Mr. Straussman had?
Certainly, she had not expected to run into him here, while she was working. Her invitation to these events came via her contacts and employer. It didn’t seem the sort of thing a respectable physician like Mr. Straussman would attend. Things were said at these parties, meetings of a certain sort were arranged. Scandals were born here. Aside from his friendship with Victor, Mr. Straussman was not the sort to become involved in any scandals.
There was an obvious answer, though, which took Sophronia a moment to recall. Lorelei. The lovely former acrobat was Baron Bomine’s official hostess, official mistress, and unofficial excuse in case of accusations of impropriety. Mr. Straussman and Lorelei were in love, a fact Baron Bomine actively encouraged. Of course Mr. Straussman would be invited to parties if Lorelei was there.
“And how is Lorelei? I don’t see her nearly as often as I’d like.”
