NEVERMORE: The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe
My husband got us tickets to see this on Poe's birthday the other day and I have to say it was totally worth it. It was pretty awesome.
It the myriad of ways that yet another adaptation of Poe's life and works could have gone awry this production manages to be emotionally compelling and musically engaging. The psuedo-industrial goth/fantasy aesthetic is fun and gave me some new ideas in regards to costume engineering.
The show follows several emotional turning points of his life and focuses on his many encounters with mental illness and the deaths of loved ones. For a longer review you can check out my husband's theater blog
My biggest disappointment with this show is the absence of a cast recording. I look all of the internet and there isn't much video/audit out there, official nor unofficial. There are a small group of videos posted by the theatre in Canada that originally produced this show here which is where the above video is from. The song played is part of the Act 1 and Act 2 finales. My favorite song was one that incorporated many lines from the poem "Israfel" and I can't find it anywhere (yes, that poem has its own issues, but the song was beautiful).
Because we all know that NYC theater can be prohibitively expensive here are a couple of options:
First, there are a limited number of $30 rush tickets available daily at the box office two hour before curtain if you have ID proving you are under 30 years old.
Second, starting today through February 8 this show is a part of the $20@20 deal for off-broadway shows. For all the shows participating a limited number of tickets go on sale 20 minutes prior to curtain for $20 with no age restrictions. Even if you're not interested in this show check the list, there might be something else you want to see.
