Block 2 Brief Launch Talks
In the first week back we have had a number of talks from photographers working in fields that our next set of briefs are based on these being Advertising, Fashion and Documentary.
The first talk was from Sarah Amy Fishlock, Sarah does primarily documentary photography so showed us a number of projects she has worked on in the past, it was really interesting to hear about some of the approaches she has taken in her documentary work. She has made a number of small photobooks relating to her work and also a serial one showcasing other photographers work both from home and worldwide. Sarah give us advice about putting our photobook together from a number of places that would print them and also about thinking very carefully about the images we put in the book making sure they all work well for the project so even if we have a great image leave it out if it doesn't work with the rest of the book because this will effect the overall finish of the work.
The next talk was given by James Phaff, James trys to balance is more personal documentary work with his commercial work both areas of James’s work have taken him all over the world from america to japan within his documentary work the place plays a big part in the work and also the people he is with. James talk help me start to think of more than just taking a nice picture and having more of a story behind the work this is critical for documentary photography this i something i think i will really have to work on in my own work.
The next talk we had was from Ruben Paris is an advertising photographer he gave us lots of advice about dealing with an advertising brief like getting all the information from the client i.e whats it for, wheres it going, budget, and get a visual idea of what they are after. Although you might not always agree with the client about the project you must always give them what they are after and then if there is time do your idea of how the project should look then present them with both, he also talked about networking with ad agencies although you might not always get a job from them get the name of another ad agent from them and you might get a job from them. He also said about taking notes and having a paper trail about exactly what you said you would do that way if something goes wrong your not left taking the fall for something you never agreed to.
The final talk of the week was from Martin D Barker, Martin does a lot of fashion photography and this was the basis of his talk. I found martins talk the most engaging as he was really good at telling it like it is and he gave us loads of amazing tips about retouching but a big part of martins talk was about learning to cope with pressure and the fear of failure i found this part of the talk really helpful as i think i can succumb to pressure and i do have a fear of failure this is something that i am aware of and trying to overcome. Looking at martins work was really useful as fashion photography is something i am not all that familiar with or had a real drive to do but after martins talk i feel less uneasy about tackling this area of photography
