Am I the only one who isn’t that horrified by the upcoming comments update?
I mean, I’m honestly not that big of a fan of the comment system we have now. in the current iteration, sometimes I find it confusing to figure out who said what in a long comment chain, since you have to scroll up to the top of the chain, then trace the line down from their name to their comment.
I do think a few additional features would be nice, such as comment timestamps (and timestamps in general, outside of Xkit) and the ability to do some form of nesting replies, i.e. the ability to reply to a comment farther up the chain and have it appear nested directly below it, but it’s not like Tumblr’s current “every comment sub-nests beneath every comment that came before it in sequential order” implementation does that stuff anyway.
Beyond that, my main concern about the new system is that it includes each blog’s icon, which looks like it’s going to make comment chains take up a LOT more vertical space. This is a significant concern, but still, it’s not like it’s the end of the world or something.
Of course, I do think Tumblr has a lot better things that it could be doing than this, such as *ahem* creating a usable messaging system, or improving the way tag searching works, but I don’t find anything particularly awful about this specific thing they’re doing, other than “adjusting to change is difficult.”
So at worst, this update is looking like “just another pointless design update that doesn’t really change a whole lot,” and at best, looks like “something that might slightly improve a minor thing a little bit.” I’m just not terribly moved by it one way or the other...
