Harkive 8/7/26

Harkive was an annual research project by Dr. Craig Hamilton aimed at understanding how, where, and why people around the world listened to music. Each year, on a specific day, listeners would send in the music they listened to, how they listened to it, where they were, and why they played what they played. Submissions occurred over twitter, instagram, tumblr, email, and on and on. Posts ranged from bullet points to essays. I only caught onto the project in July 2021 (here’s my first post about it), which happened to be its last year. It’s grown to be a personal music documentation prompt for me that I follow through with every so often. With that said…

I guess I can transition to just calling this a music listening log/journal, rather than a Harkive post, though I like the implied connection to a broader conscious-music-listening-documentation crowd. We’ll see, much to consider for now.

Buckling in because I have a lot of open tabs to go through at work today. Yesterday was a deep discovery day as well, but I wasn’t in the mood to write. Some highlights from yesterday (and the day before): 

Stay Another Season – bought the new EP (double single?), Victory Formation / Texas. It’s pure bliss, a nice combo of the gentler side of DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ (a documented favorite of mine) and the Avalanches (another documented favorite of mine, and presumably their namesake). 

Steve Khan – delicious jazz fusion, something I cannot get enough of lately. A good chunk of his album covers were designed by Jean-Michel Folon, whose work I have very recently become a fan of. 

Michael Chapman – woke up to gray skies the other day, in line with Savannah’s late summer storms. Usually the gray doesn’t hover all day, but it’s been sticking around this week. Plugged in “Crocky Hill Disaster,” as I am prone to do in this weather, and then poked around his discography once I got to work. The Quietus has a nice article about his career with some highlights from his (many) albums. 

Discovered Record Crates United while wandering around BandCamp, cool stuff. Started listening to Mixtape 212 at the end of the workday yesterday, will get around to finishing after lunch today. Through this, I discovered Electromagnetic Radio, a lovely internet radio station that I’m excited to dive into. Looking forward to researching more internet radio shows, finding one that suits my taste, and potentially submitting a show idea.

Listened to this week’s wake up playlist in the car, very gentle this week. I’ve been creating 8 song “wake up” playlists since the fall of 2017 (admittedly intermittent over the past few years). The concept originated from my time at sleepaway camp: the counselors would craft a playlist that would play between the first alarm to when it was time to be on the porch to head to breakfast. In my non-camp life, I started making these weekly playlists for 2 reasons: to get back into a similar auditory morning routine and to make my way through my music library, 8 songs at a time. I started at the top of my library and now I’m somewhere in the “C’s.”

“Cloud of Our Own” by The Internet. Haven’t listened to this album in a while, it’s nice.

“Cloud Rock” by Go Kurosawa, the closing track on last year’s soft shake. 

Tuned into East Village Radio after my meeting, I always like to see what I can catch from Sympathetic Hum. 

After lunch, I’m back tending to my open tabs. Starting off with 宇宙 日本 世田谷 by Fishmans. I’ve certainly heard of them before, but never got around to listening. Gently psych-influenced, cool and hazy. Some favorites: “Ushirosugata,” “In the Flight,” and “Back Beat Ni Nokkatte.” This album for sure lives up to all the hype it gets.

Vibe shifted over to Laid Back by Gregg Allman. They recently showed the new documentary at the Lucas, but I had plans, so I missed it. I think it’s up on Apple TV, so maybe I’ll tune in this weekend. As mentioned many, many times before, I’ll never be able to shed the feeling of camp from me and albums like this allow me to relight and relight and relight again (fitting day to bring that song to the forefront. One of the first musician/artist deaths to really hit me. RIP forever and ever). 

No music between work and dinner. Spent some time on the Internet Archive (non music oriented), cooked a subpar meal (classic), and cleared off my kitchen table (something I’ve been meaning to do for a week). Settled into the evening and now tuning into all the open tabs I have open on two windows on my home laptop. Starting off with the self-titled release by April March and Los Cincos. Found it on a slowcore RYM list, but the twee is overpowering the weight I expected from the album cover. Good, not my favorite. Probably won’t get a replay from me, but always happy to expand my knowledge/palette.

Another vibe shift to this freaky, prog-y electronic album from 1976, Pôle by Besombes and Rizet. Sounds like a lot of other freaky, prog-y electronic music from the 1970s (perhaps you’ve heard of Tangerine Dream?), but that does not diminish its delightful appeal to me. 

Ended the night with more Stay Another Season. Good music day!

Yes, I'm annoyed by the new community guidelines and here's why

So they keep saying that they want to create a safe environment for *everyone* well here's the thing, you're blocking and destroying a whole community of people who don't know where to find people that think alike and share the same sexual interests and fantasies now that you're going to take that away from them. So stop telling me you want to make everyone feel safe and let everyone be who they want to be cos you're taking that away from a whole community. I get it, there are some really messed up and dark parts on Tumblr as well that shouldn't be there, but don't take everything away from a group that has nothing to do with that.

And fix your Android app in the meantime. My internet WoRkS pErFeCtLy
