How to Install a New Radiator
For an amateur car hobbyist, replacing an automotive radiator might seem like a daunting task. However, the process can be relatively simple if the following steps are followed:
Allow the current system to cool completely before you remove the radiator cap. This will keep you from getting burned when you drain out the old coolant fluid.
Drain out the radiator completely, making sure that you take care to dispose of the fluid with care. Used coolant is poisonous and should never be drained into a public waste water system.
Disconnect all the hoses leading to the radiator. With hoses that are difficult to remove, penetrating oil should be used to avoid damage.
Remove the thermostat.
Flush the engine by running water through the top hose until it runs clear. This should rid the engine of any contaminated coolant still left inside it.
Remove the fan assembly, taking care not to bend the blades.
Unbolt and remove the old radiator by sliding it up and out of the car. Check for any mounting cushions that might have fallen off the radiator mounts.
Install the new radiator, carefully taking care not to bend any fins. Reinstall the fan assembly, hoses, and other parts in a reverse order of disassembly.
Fill the new radiator with water and coolant at a 50:50 ratio, run the vehicle at idle and continue to top the radiator off with coolant and water until the level no longer recedes.
