Socks
“Oh oh oh! Sister Aimee, how about these?”
The excited chirping came from the Miqo’te woman as she bounded up to the blonde healer, holding up her latest find - and what a treasure indeed. Rainbow patterned in striped from beginning to end! Aimee smiled despite herself. She could almost immediately conjure up the face that Vingt would make it he was presented with something like that.
Such was the hazards of interesting sock shopping. What with the recent fashion explosion and all the imports and styles coming in from cultures they were once separated from, a person would be hard pressed not to find a unique something for every part of the body.
“I’m...not sure.”, she answered truthfully...at least at first. The fact that Moka’s face immediately fell had Aimee’s stomach shrink, tacking on a very hasty: “But maybe we can add it to the pile we have started to choose from when we’re done?”
Which was precisely where the majority of the socks had gone. Everything from Dodo prints to even ones that were made with little leather attachment capes with very intricate stitching that resembled adventurer armor across the toes and ankles. One pair had made it officially through so far; it was the most interesting shade of green that Aimee had ever seen. Ember had insisted that it reminded her of their new mutual...acquaintance? Friend...Frienemy? Aimee could accept those...they ran a pretty low risk of rejection, at least.
She should have foreseen any sort of outing with the excitable female Subject to go as swimmingly as this; so much energy and nothing at all simple about finding just one in a matter of moments.”I think...we’re going to need something a little more durable than some of these. He wasn’t wearing any actual shoes when I saw him, so...”
“Oh! Yes, actually, you’re right. He doesn’t. He told me a little bit about it.”, Moka was mid-toss of the rainbow socks on to the aforementioned pile, then paused. “I dunno if they make the kinda socks that would work best for him. He has super sharp nails, ya see.”
"Nails...Hm. Maybe...", Aimee set down the ones she was looking at, frowning over at Ember. "I don't understand. If he has such a special need, why wasn't he given something as part of...well, his uniform? That...sock", and she was using the term very loosely for the shredded bit of material wrap that Nate had tossed in her face in the ward "he had was no protection at all. Maybe I could see it if he was inside, but not running around on his own."
Moka grinned, flapping a single sock that was bright yellow with what looked like fat dodos stitched on to them. "Brother's tougher than you think. But he does deserve better. I was surprised myself, really..Even after I asked him, he didn't even excuse...", she bit her bottom lip, the sharpness of her teeth pulling against the tender skin before letting loose again. "Anyway, this will be a nice treat, I think.", now it was the Miqo'te's turn to frown; with a flourish, that sock went sailing somewhere completely seperated from it's fellower. "You know, I take it back. None of these will work! I want to say they'll work, but they won't. We need something special of the specialist special for him and I don't think anything made for everybody else will do.", she zeroed a sharp look at Aimee. "Can you make some?"
"Me? Make socks?"
"Yeah! I can help. I mean I never really used one of those needles, but I've had a lot of needles used on me, so that's kinda the same right?"
"I don't think it works like that..."
But Aimee was laughing. The image of Ember stabbing at material like she was trying to imply an injection was too perfect. But the idea itself..."Ember, I don't really know.", she held a hand up, cutting off the other woman as soon as she saw her mouth opening to interject again. "But I do think you're right. Excuse me!", she raised her voice, calling over one of the owners of the shop. "I need to purchase these.", she picked up one pair they had agreed upon and handing them over. "Ember, could you put away these others? I think I know what we should do."
~*~*~*~*~ "Well, what do you think?"
With a slight feeling of trepidation, Aimee held up her work for inspection. Plain black with stitched in strips of the green, she had replaced the concentional bottom and through the toes, replacing it with a more durable, thicker material meant to protect him from walking over rocks and not wear down as quickly as conventional cotton. They weren't the most beautiful, but they would keep him warm and from tearing himself up. More importantly, they should last him a deal longer, regardless of his physical peculiarities.
"Ohhhhhh!", but there was no amount of hesitation at all from 174. She reached out and clamped ahold of the socks, lifting them up above her head as if that would give her a better viewing advantage. "These are amazing! Super neatly awesome! Ahh the green looks like goo-drip! And they won't be super bright so they can see him a malm away. I mean", she lowered them a little bit, peering at Aimee over her shoulder with her face lit up in a smile. "I would LOVE to have socks that could be seen from a malm away. Could you imagine? Especially if everyone was already scared of you. It would be like...a becon of DEATH! BUM BUM BAAAA!", she rattled out the sound on a long note then snickered. "I bet he'll like them though. I do have one thing though..."
Aimee lifted a brow. "What one thing is that?"
"Well...", Moka lowered them further, laying one over the other and sort of tucking them in against herself. "It's...something I want to add. Something special. Could I maybe try? On my own? I promise I won't mess them up and if I need help, I'll come back and see you!"
Aimee hesitated, then mentally kicked herself. What reason would she have to say 'no'? Worse case came to it, she could just make another pair...and then, her stitching might be a little bit better to come from it. "Sure, of course. Here.", she handed over the colored thread she had used, the needle carefully tucked in to it. "And use this. If you're anything like me, you'll need it.", adding a thimble in there. "Don't take too long though. Let's get them to him as soon as we can."
