Bob Hope, late night storm, ancient artifacts...

1917- Staff and users given 1 hour to vacate when US takes over The Armory to quarter newly arrived military aviation trainees. July 31.

1922- Huge fire on state fairgrounds destroys Administration Building and four other buildings.

1926- Archaeologists from Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society Museum on campus unearth magnificent tortoiseshell comb in Seip Mound near Bainbridge OH. August 4.

1967- Psychedelic film festival is Underground Cinema 12 feature at World Theater, 2159 N High. Saturday night at midnight. August 5.

1987- Overnight storm with winds to 70 mph inflicts much destruction on neighborhoods to the south of campus. Power outages. Trees and branches downed throughout Victorian Village and Goodale Park. August 2.

1991- 88 year-old Bob Hope makes his 15th and final appearance at Ohio State Fair. August 4.

2009- Sweeping renovations of Main Library complete after 3 years and $109 million. Building reopens. August 3.

Wow what a crazy couple of days! So blessed and proud of my beautiful girl! Finished two days of orientation down in OSU and it was incredible to see where she will be living the next 4 years! McKinley,  munition mixup, and “Meatless Monday”

1897- President William McKinley is first sitting president to visit the Ohio State Fair. September 3.

1899- Two killed, one injured in Battle of San Juan Hill recreation by National Guardsmen at Ohio State Fair. Blanks and real bullets mixed. September 7.

1907- Toledo OH’s Roy Knabenshue and his airship fly from Ohio State Fair to Statehouse lawn and back. September 7.

1909- Indianola Junior High School opens at 140 E. 16th Ave. First in nation. September 7.

1917- Veggie supper tonight as campus homes observe "Meatless Monday" to save food for war. Coming up "Wheatless Wednesday" and "Sweetless Saturday." September 3.

1931- 15,000 union members at Olentangy Park for celebration of Labor Day, pageant of labor movement history. September 7.

2009- Astronaut, US senator, and Ohio State friend John Glenn dots the "i" in Script Ohio at OSU vs. Navy game. September 5.

1893- Iconic Buckeye building Orton Hall opens its doors to students. September 1.

1897- Women's Christian Temperance Union dining hall is a favorite of multitudes at 37th Ohio State Fair. August 29.

1917- Aviatrix Ruth Law thrills fairgoers with aerial stunts high above a 67th Ohio State Fair absolutely swathed in red-white-and-blue. August 28.

1927- Board of Education purchases northern half of Indianola Park amusement park for construction of Indianola Middle School. September 2.

1982- Very first BW3 opens at SE corner of Woodruff and High this month. Featured second story party room with hot tub. Now has over 1,200 locations in all 50 states. None with hot tubs. September 1.

2007- New Weinland Park Elementary and Schoenbaum Family Center opens. August 29.

2012- Demolition of the 77 year-old 5th Ave. dam on the Olentangy River begins. Aims to return river to more natural condition. August 29.

1917- New Big Four Railroad viaduct over E. 11th Ave. delivers visitors straight to gates of the 67th Ohio State Fair. August 26.

1936- Social insurance campaigner Francis E. Townsend holds "All-Ohio Rally" for followers at state fairgrounds. Aided by giant 50’ x 50’ screen. August 23.

1957- Concert by TV star and teen idol Ricky Nelson is the big draw at 1957 Ohio State Fair. August 23.

1967- Art and architecture faculty decry hideousness of Lincoln and Morrill Towers. "Terrible mistake." August 25.

1977- Afternoon thunderstorm causes power outage at Ohio State Fair. Butter Darth Vader melts down. August 21.

1990- Campus rejoices as WWCD (CD101), Columbus' first alternative rock station, begins broadcasting. August 21.

2012- President Barack Obama stops by Sloopy's in Ohio Union, has Reuben, visits with students. August 21.

1917- Mary Pickford battles the Boche in patriotic The Little American at The Alhambra, 2159 N. High. August 14.

1922- Homeopathic Hospital closes. Ohio State University Hospital opens in Starling-Loving Hall. August 15.

1947- University begs Columbus residents to rent out spare rooms. Housing for 27,000 students needed by September. August 17.

1967- Coed assaulted by flasher at Hunter and 11th after police arrest her escort for late night jaywalking and refuse her a ride to her home. August 13.

1970- Air Force lieutenant arrested. Planned to plant bombs on campus to draw attention from a series of intended bank robberies. August 15.

1977- WOW! Signal received at Ohio State’s Big Ear radio telescope near Delaware OH. Of possible alien origin. August 15.

1984- Ohio State coeds appear without their scarlet and gray in Playboy's Girls of the Big Ten issue. August 17.

1917- German language professors at Ohio State denied access to campus by military authorities. August 10.

1923- Ohio State University closed for day in memorial to (and to allow travel to the funeral of) fallen US President (and Ohioan) Warren G. Harding. August 10.

1927- Prof Henry Clyde Shetrone of the Museum unearths "Great Warrior Burial" at Seip Mound, Ross Co OH. 39th burial excavated at ancient site. Many copper axes within. August 6.

1957- Classic Fifties drive-in double-feature at W. 5th Ave. Drive-In is "I Was A Teenage Werewolf" and "Invasion of the Saucer Men." August 9.

1964- Meeting held at Ohio Union to recruit volunteers for African-American voter registration drive in Mississippi. August 11.

1982- To the chagrin of all future governors, Jim Rhodes begins tradition of governor spending a night at Ohio State Fair with the kids exhibiting livestock. August 6.

2003- Ohio potato chip manufacturers create world record bag of potato chips (1,082.5 lbs.) at 150th Ohio State Fair. August 8.

Sixty-five pies, Jehovah's Witnesses, and a laundry bar...

1917- Ohio Union serves 150 loaves of bread, 25 dozen rolls, 65 pies, 35 cases of milk, 1 barrel of potatoes, and 18 hams on a typical day to military trainees at Ohio State. July 25.

1924- Jehovah's Witnesses founder Judge Rutherford addresses crowd of >75,000 faithful at Ohio Stadium. July 27.

1952- First services at new Modern-styled St. Stephens Episcopal Church, corner of W. Woodruff and N. High. July 27.

1970- Coed shot to death by early morning intruder at 42 E. 13th Ave. apartment. Wrong man arrested. Freed at trial by ballistics evidence. Homicide still unsolved. July 26.

1987- Laundry with potato skins, chicken nuggets, pizza, nachos and beer at Dirty Dungarees, 18 E. 11th, Ohio’s Original Laundro-Bar. July 23.

2003- Execution-style triple murder at 235 E 11th Ave. Ohio State student, her boyfriend, and his roommate killed by drug thieves. July 23.

2014- Ohio State makes controversial decision to fire marching band director Jon Waters. Claims he permitted environment of sexual harassment. July 24.
