So long Newark Bears

The Newark Bears have shut down operations.  Will they be back for 2015 - who knows.  Since leaving the higher level Atlantic League for the CanAm, their attendance dwindled season after season.  Leaving the higher quality league had an immediate impact on attendance, as it was cut in half.

The romantic baseball fan in me is sorry to see them go - the first Newark Bears team of the minor International League was in existence from 1917 to 1949.  It was great to see a classic team revived in 1998 and move into a ballpark named for the team and for the Negro League Newark Eagles (Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium).

At this point, the Can-Am league is down to four teams and will be the fourth division of the American Association (the two leagues share a commissioner in Miles Wolff).  The long travel distances will not help this arrangement - travel is often the greatest expense for the independent teams.

The Atlantic League should seriously consider absorbing the four remaining teams of the CanAm league.  The AtL is a quality league, but it's relative small size makes it look like a lower tier than it actually is.  Having the Jackals be in the league would be pushing the Atlantic League's policy of AAA quality stadiums - but there might be another option for the team in the future.
