Hyperlinks
New Media art is an art form that has been around for quite some time now. During my time reading both Lev Manovich’s “New Media From Borges to HTML” and Charlie Gere’s “New Media Art and the Gallery in the Digital Age,” I took an interest in the hyperlinks provided throughout each article. The hyperlinks provided me with depth into certain works of arts, museums, or subjects that I might have been unfamiliar with. I found this to give me a better understanding of what both authors were describing in their articles. For example, Lee Manovich provides his readers with a lot of history about new media arts. He starts off showing the readers that digital media arts has been around and unrecognized for quiet some time now, starting back in the 1970’s. Manovich explains that new media first took more of a commercial form used for network-based media, programming, games, and more. The 1990’s were the first time digital media started to significantly get recognized in the U.S. Manovich goes on to provide museums in which this digital media art was first recognized, like San Francisco Museum of Modern art (SFMOMA) and Whitney Museum. Manovich provides hyperlinks for these museums to help the reader get a better understanding of the work and the museum. Through a simple Hyperlink, Manovich provides the reader with a visual example of the museums he is discussing.
Manovich goes on in his paper to discuss his eight propositions. One of which is, New Media as Computer Technology used as a Distribution Platform. Manovich hyperlinks his article,”The Language of New Media” in his first paragraph to provide a reader with deeper insight into what Manovich thinks New Media is. In this article, Manovich describes new media as anything from cd’s and dvd’s to websites and more.
In Gere’s article, “New Media Art and the Gallery in the Digital Age,” Gere states that it is important to include new digital media arts in museums and galleries because it is part of our art history past. I think that it is important to display digital media arts in galleries as well. Part of our digital media arts is already remembered through the Internet though. Hyperlinks is a direct example of this. We can provide an online source to various forms of digital media through simple things like hyperlinks.
