A Day In The Life
At 6am Jacob’s alarm rings and he pulls himself from his bed to dress and head out for his daily morning run. Although waking up is a universal chore, Jake prefer to see the dawn and feel the brisk morning air serenade him like the chirping of the birds. His feet meet the tarmac like old friends and working up a sweat gets his mind going in the morning. He’d take a coffee and morning toast to help with that too of course, once he’d had a shower and sat down for a quick skim of Facebook for the news.
At 8am Jacob would head out, dressed appropriately, and make it to the office as early as traffic would allow. Very often his day would start slightly tardy, but then, his knock-on schedule of late appointees would usually cause that anyway. He would usually do a number of appointments and get paperwork done in between on his rare missed appointments and no-shows. He tried to prioritise new test results and labwork, getting those calls out of the way early. He also tries to spend an efficient period of time with anyone who was in his office and either fix the problem or refer them on to higher means.
Lunch is usually late, often at odd times off the hour such as a semi-regular 1:15pm. Lunch would usually also be rushed, there is much to do and although he is allotted this time to himself, his mind is often not in the staff room like his body. Jacob is preparing for his house calls that come next and anticipating what he’ll need to take with him. Or thinking about whoever he was just with, often Jacob is unable to stop going in the day once he has started.
Jacob usually begins assembling what he needs for any home calls of the day at roughly 1:45pm, if he has no house calls he will often accept walk-in’s or same day appointments at this time. This period of time can be the most exciting or intriguing due to the nature of these types of visits. Sometimes it includes going out to elderly individuals to regulate medications, sometimes this after-lunch period is devoted to any urgent meetings that would be coming up. This time is when the magic happens. At 2:30pm the afternoon surgery begins and Jacob follows that schedule as to be expected. Any training of students or interns is squeezed into any skipped appointment slots in the afternoon.
A day ends at approximately 6:30pm. Jacob is lucky that his jobs is somewhat regulated, and that New Eden has such goos healthcare options or else he would surely be in the surgery all day AND night. He is usually tired at the end of the day but as a young and fit Doctor he is able to take these busy days in his stride. Some days are more difficult than others and some days Jacob is stuck making referrals or calls later into the night. If his last appointment of the day requires longer than his last appointment time who knows how long he would need to stay late. It’s a good thing that there’s only a plant or two waiting for him at home. His dinner is often something less nutritious that his other meals in the day. Jacob might head to a bar after work and take the edge off, or usually he can be found in his livingroom with a soap on in the background, scrolling facebook. Either of these options help with unwinding. He may even be found swiping a picture or two on a dating app.
It’s rare that Jacob sees past 10pm, with his day usually starting over at 6 again the next morning. Sometimes he ends the day on the couch and sometimes in the bed. On a particularly good weekend he might enjoy deeper into the night but with his regular monday-friday schedule, he’s usually done by double digits. Jacob considers his days to have a lot of meaning and diversity to them, he considers them rushed, slightly underfunded, and usually running late, but he also considers those things a semblance of order. His favourite activities include the short and sweet sessions administering the switch shot, and he finds particularly long appointments with hypochondriacs to be especially frustrating. Jake communicates with his friends usually through facebook messanger but is always seeking additional company.

Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?
What mark did you think you would get?
(public answer) I think I always imagined that I would be a submissive, mostly just by judging based on those around me. I’ve never really had trouble doing what I’m told, and I’ve always found a lot of satisfaction in being praised for a job well done.
(private thoughts) I don’t think anyone with a shred of dominance would have allowed their parents to stand them on a podium every weekend and make them read from prewritten notecards about how fervently they supported a set of ideals that they didn’t even really care about so the submissive mark felt inevitable.
The alarm goes off and for a long moment Fliss considers not getting up, for months that had been her coping mechanism. Just letting the days pass by as if they were one long blur. But she sighs, and reaches for her phone face turning to meet the dawn creeping through her curtains. Her apartment is in the in between being full and empty, half of the furniture already packed into boxes or sold off to someone who was in need of it. After all she would be downsizing considerably after she moved in above the flower shop. Other people might have clung more tightly to what had been her marital home, but nothing in the apartment felt like it was hers. Almost all of the furniture had been in the space before she was, and the now empty walls of the place just reminded her of the fact that Hal wasn’t around to fill them.

↪ To love is not weak. Love is the strongest thing there is.
The day she got her mark was both terrifying and exhilarating. It meant a chance at what the rest of her life would bring. It also meant that her mother was dragging her by the upper arm towards the salon to get the hair she’d been so desperately trying to grow out past her chin chopped off. The grip on her arm twisted and burned. As they rounded into the store, the scent of perm product singed at her nose, and many of the other women there complimented her mother’s own style and asked her what brush she used to tease it. Part of Lex was disgusted at the show, seeing how easily she turned on the charm for everyone that wasn’t privy to who she really was. Part of Lex wanted to swap stories about where to buy the best heels and product.
Shoved into a seat, she heard her mom say to give her a buzz and the dread sank into her stomach. She didn’t cry, though, as much as she wanted to-- she held herself together and went through the motions.
Without a word, she kept her head tilted down until they were brought to the doctor’s office. There were some other kids there, looking far more happy to finally find their place in society. It was hours before they were called back. While she waited, she watched the other pre-teens talk to their parents or to each other or make conversation. Her mom had her nose buried in a magazine, flipping through the latest styles and fashions or whatever the hell she was interested in that week. Her stomach once again clenched at the way the nurse used her full name, but she was thankful for the brief reprieve from her mother’s presence while they did the check up and explained the process.
A quick prick and blood test, and then she’d be back in the waiting room until they called both of them back for the results. The nurse seemed so friendly and sweet that Lex wanted to tell her not to let her go back to the waiting room. To let her hide in here or shadow her or something. Anything to be away and see what it was like. But she said nothing, and only gave her a sad smile before sliding off of the table, paper crinkling as she did so.
The waiting room seemed even more daunting as she went back to sit next to her mom. She tried to focus on the television there, some of the stories that mom watched at home during the day playing through the crackling screen. Another hour or so passed. She and her mother were called back into the office, Lex sitting on the examination table once again with her hands folded neatly in her lap, and legs together. Her mom gave her a look of disgust, that wasn’t meant to be caught by either of the others in the room. It was. Lex moved her legs further apart and rested her hands on her thighs out of instinct. The doctor hesitated.
“The results were overwhelmingly in favor of Dominant markings. Congratulations, Mr. Stovall.” Lex flinched at the use of mister, but mustered a small smile and a nod. Even the weight on her mother’s shoulders seemed to fall off a bit.
It was both the first and the last time she heard: “Your dad will be so proud.”
