After seeing how many times Wolverine and Cable hung out on the covers of their comic books during Cable's early appearances, I'm surprised these two never had their own comic book series. I guess that's what Deadpool is for once he shows up in the next issue. I can't believe there's only 4 issues of New Mutants left! (New Mutants #97 – Jan 1991)

Storm gives the New Mutants their powers back, and Wolfsbane manifests a more powerful version of her wolf transformation. This is also why we don’t see her transform into a human very much when she joins X-Factor shortly after this, because her human form is all messed up thanks to the Genegineer’s brainwashing. I don’t see why she couldn’t just write herself a bunch of notes when she’s in her wolf form so when she transforms into a human she knows what’s going on. Like in the movie Momento. Notes are very helpful. (New Mutants #97 – Jan 1991)

These skirmishes with Cameron Hodge are entertaining. The X-Men are sneaking around these Genoshan ducts and Hodge is phasing through the floors picking everyone off. Here we see Iceman get impaled, and it seems like he just got impaled a few issues ago. Has he even healed up from the last time he got impaled? I’ll tell you what, there isn’t much story taking place in X-Tinction Agenda, but after revisiting the crossover I think it actually might make for a decent adaptation to to film or television. There’s a tense Alien vibe, with a creepy xenomorph-like villain hunting our heroes through claustrophobic environments. Simple, yet visually engaging, which is about the best Marvel Studios can manage these days. (New Mutants #97 – Jan 1991)

I knew it!! Gambit wasn’t just hanging out with Storm because of some kind of honor among thieves sentiment. He was lusting after her! And apparently, he would prefer to kiss her as a child instead of as an adult woman??? Am I reading this correctly?? It’s a miracle that Gambit became so popular after these skeezy first appearances. The only way this could have been better is if Hodge ripped the Genegineer apart by his legs as if he were a wishbone and then threw the two halves of his body at different people. Man, when I go out, I hope I go out blasting some hideous monster in the face with a bazooka right before he tears me apart with his tentacles. 

I’m just going to ignore the fact that Rahne can transform into her full-wolf form and her half-wolf form and the skin suit that’s grafted onto her body just magically disappears and reappears because I’ve already focused way too much on how those suits work. It’s just comic book gobbledygook at this point. What’s not gobbledygook is it’s almost time for the New Mutants to come home from another mission and they’re carrying another one of their teammates home with them in an urn. The way this is written, I’m actually surprised that Warlock stayed dead after this. Seems like this was being set up for some kind of technoorganic resurrection for Warlock and possibly Doug Ramsey as well once Warlock gets sprinkled all over him. I guess once the chips fell, no one cared enough to used the characters. (New Mutants #97 – Jan 1991)

Whew ok here is some explanation as to how Storm is able to give everyone their powers back. Apparently, when the Genegineer turned Storm into a mutate, he imbued her with the ability to short circuit Wipeout’s power nulling effects, and he did this specifically to betray Cameron Hodge because they have creative differences over how the country of Genosha should execute their fascist agenda. Well wait a second now that still doesn’t make any god damned sense. The Genegineer can put something into people that cancels out Wipeout’s powers? How in the fuck does he do that? The Genegineer can’t just cancel out mutant powers, can he? If he can do that, what does he need Wipeout for? Why doesn’t he just put power canceling abilities into all the mutates? And why did Storm turn back into an adult? Can the Genegineer cancel out Nanny’s child metamorphosis spell as well? You know, this comic book almost started making sense, but then I thought about it for half a second and everything melted into run-of-the-mill comic book gobbledygook. Well it’s too late to write a letter to the editor so let’s just move on with our lives.

Hodge can also phase like Kitty Pryde, which is pretty badass and contributes to a pretty intimidating power set, but this also doesn’t make any sense. If that kind of technology exists, give it to all your soldiers! (New Mutants #97 – Jan 1991)
