I'm cycling around town, going from shop to shop, trying to find a gift for my nephew. My nephew who was

stillborn

two years ago this week. Friday will be the day he died. Saturday the day he was born.

I'm thinking about negative space. How Newton was the one to posit the existence of empty space. I observe the people around me, walking, cycling, driving, and notice the space between them. I wonder if more space is empty than not. It reckon it probably is.

I think about my youngest nephew, who exists solely because his brother does not. He brings joy and meaning and life, and takes up space. Though not the hole my nephew left in our family.

And I wonder if what we leave behind when we die is not emptiness. That the universe is filled to the brim with existence, even of babies who never lived, people we never met. How we can mourn what never was. And I think that brings me solace and allows me, maybe, to bear the

empty

that our world exists of. Just a little.
