Pop!_OS Weekly Update: New UX Architect, Pop!_Theme 2, Community Manager Position
Pop!_OS Has a New UX Architect
Cassidy has been promoted to System76 UX Architect. He’ll lead the effort to craft our research and modeling process which will determine the features that go into Pop!_OS. He’ll also mine support data to spot customer pain points.
It’s a good time to reiterate what to expect from our first release. Our work up until October 19th centers on establishing the aesthetics of the OS, developing the build and QC process, upgrade path, default apps, and installer along with some GNOME Online Accounts improvements. This cycle is all about creating a solid platform to build on. Next, through our development approach, we’ll add features that focus on productivity for professionals.
This also means we have a new job opening! We’re seeking a full-stack web developer that leans towards the front end. That is, you understand the stack and can work throughout it, but UI is your sweet spot. The position will be posted next week but you can send a resume and cover letter to [email protected] now.
Pop!_Theme 2 and Call for Testing
After someone’s been at System76 seven years, they’ve earned a two month sabbatical. Ian, our theme developer, just returned from taking half his time off and in the last week managed to make nice progress on a new version of the theme.
This version brings a completely re-written codebase centered around the Flat-Plat theme. This new base allows us to reduce the memory usage and exercise much greater control over the theme and it's technical implementation.
New Features:
Some of the colors have been backed off slightly for much greater usability and a more professional look. This includes the green and red colors for constructive and destructive actions, respectively.
Dialog boxes and pop-ups will use light-colored backgrounds for the light theme and dark for the dark. This adds consistency to the theme. Pop-ups are now the same color as the clock drop-down and system menu.
Fixes the Pop!_OS memory bug
Brighter colors for active sidebar elements, aiding contrast.
Other various tweaks and modifications to small details in the theme.
Pop-ups now match the shell.
There are lots of little corner cases in theme development and we’d love your help in finding bugs or unexpected colors and behavior. To use the latest theme:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:system76/pop sudo apt update sudo apt install pop-theme
