Journalists can’t see the forest for the trees…they can only see Ford for the trees

I don’t think journalism (i.e. the kind practiced by media outlets and their journalists in Canada’s current political state) are central to the practice of liberal democracy. Aside from enshrining the freedom of the press, the media have essentially lost sight on how to cover political content.

Specifically, I would argue that the media have lost sight about what they should be informing the public about. The Rob Ford saga continues to be a beacon to this point. Duly noted in Shoemaker and Reese’s “Building a theory of News Content,” there seems to be an increasing trend in the media’s routine to focus the majority of reporting on events rather than actual issues.

Although Toronto’s city council debates and discusses important city issues, the media rarely focuses on council debates or track how many items of the agenda actually got discussed. Instead they choose to hound the Mayor outside his office until he spurts out another sensational comment that is newsworthy for all intended comedic purposes.

This reinforces Shoemaker’s point that issues and events that don’t include good film or video footage may not be included in tv newscasts. Interestingly, the fact that Canadian media only highlighted or aired city council debates in which Ford made a spectacle of himself (i.e. knocking over other Councillors) illustrates that news content is a far cry from shedding light on the real issues facing Toronto.  

On another note, I just started up my paper.li and I was inundated with news updates from the BBC news about former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s death.  Political figures deaths seem to be events that are congruent with media routines. Following on the heels of Mandela’s death it is not surprising that media outlets such as BBC news dedicate a prominent part of their news section to covering Sharon’s death.
