Inspired by the Vignelli!

Art director Ian Thomas used Vignelli-designed examples from the 1970s to help inspire The Architect's Newspaper​ new look!

"Drawing inspiration from Massimo Vignelli’s classic templates for The Herald and Skyline, the new site employs a ruled system with a view to enhancing visual clarity and eliminating redundancies in navigation."

Here's what the Vignellis had to say about these newspaper designs (images and text from our design:Vignelli exhibition):

"Since 1978, “Skyline,” the “New York Architecture and Design Calendar,” has been published by the dynamic Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, an organization that has put New York back on the world’s architectural map. The central spread of the tabloid is the calendar, while preceding and following pages contain essays, reviews, and previews of events. The graphic structure is three columns, with eight modules per column. The type is Century Expanded for the text and Century Bold for the titles. Bold horizontal stripes and captions in Italic compartmentalize the different articles throughout the tabloid. The design format of these newspapers is meant to reduce the layout task to a minimum without loss of aesthetics."

"In 1971, when we were given the opportunity to design “The Herald,” a new weekly paper from the New York area, we were ready. Structured on a grid of six columns with sixteen modules per column, one typeface (Times Roman) throughout, one size for text, a few for titles, and italics for captions and decks, the paper was equipped for fast production —and indeed it was produced quickly! Every page or two constituted a section of the whole paper, and all pages were structured in clear horizontal bands, giving them a strong, easy-to-read look. Two tabloids were contained inside. All titles were confined to one module space. Unfortunately, the paper folded due to distribution problems."
