Twenty Days of Javanese Script #20DintenAksaraJawa | By Nevi Ayu E.
So I did this 30 Days of Type challenge thing last month, but with the letters of the Javanese Script (Aksara Jawa Nglegena). I got to try out a bunch of typography-type design style, or what do you call it idk, and also learn more stuff about the script system. For example, there used to be more than 20 letters to the script system, but these Aksara Nglegéna, 20 consonant sounds, are the ones used in this modern world. Well, plus some others, like Aksara Murda for capital letters and the one for loan words and also for numbers. Beware, this will be a heavy post because I'm going to post all 20 of them here haha.
This script system isn't really widely used nowadays. All I know is in my place, it's still a mandatory subject in schools and it's used in signages, like for street and government institution signs. Not that it's dead, but not used in daily life. One time I was reading a comic book by one of my favourite artist and he wrote a swear word in Aksara Jawa lol. Quoting Fatimah (2020) via Wikipedia, on of the hurdles on revitalising the use of Javanese script is the lack of typographical explorations that may intrigue contemporary viewers. So, am I working towards becoming part of the solution for the people or what hahaha bye, sorry. Anyways, I thank you for reading my thesis.

Download Vercetti Regular
Vercetti Regular is a sans serif font inspired by a humanistic design with a geometric touch. Its character structure is solid and moderately conventional, integrating smoothly into miscellaneous projects such as editorial design, branding, or advertising.
For the next 36 days, I’ll be sharing my work on a project entitled 36 Days of Type. I’ll be remixing some work I did circa 2012 (since technically, all the work published in 2023 is in 2022) as a type of 10 year anniversary twinsies uber mega wonderfestivus celebration. I hope you enjoy.
I will be basing my alphabet on the work of Koloman Moser, of Vienna Secession fame in honor of my alma mater, the Savannah College of Art and Design. Each year, they used to do a show of the best work from the graphic design school in homage to the artists that ‘seceded’ from the academy in Vienna in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Some of the artists who lent their names to the cause were Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, now household names.
“2023 Edition of 36 Days of Type is finally here! From April 10 to May 15, every designer, illustrator or artist is invited to share their own creative take on the letters and numbers from the Latin alphabet and share it with the world, as a global and simultaneous act of creativity exploring the boundaries of typography.” —from the 36 Days of Type website
When the 36 days are over, I’ll go back to making the attempt to be an editorial illustrator for last year’s works as per usual. Thanks for following along with me. If you’re on instagram, you can follow my work here. And you can follow what I’m sure will be an awesome curation of the best work from this project at the 36 Days of Type account. Maybe a few of mine will make it there too!
I’m also going to include quotes from designers, letterers, and fellow graphic nerds as often as possible. There’s some witty ones in this world, so this should be fun to share. I hope you also find them fun to read.
