New York City Hall and buildings of Newspaper Row as identified by caption, circa 1905, in this photo from 6sqft.com via Times Photo Archive (their identification).  The World Building would be demolished in the mid-1950s to accommodate upgraded roadway access to the Brooklyn Bridge.

Circa 1900 postcard view of New York’s City Hall and (center) the New York World Building (also known as the Pulitzer Building).  The 1890 skyscraper was a flamboyant statement by Joseph Pulitzer that the newspaper he’d purchased wasn’t going to play second fiddle to the other papers in the city.  Its gold dome was visible for miles, and was illuminated on special occasions such as elections, with a color scheme announcing the results (see below).  The building was demolished in 1955 to accommodate an expanded roadway approach to the Brooklyn Bridge.  Images come from the highly recommended Daytonian in Manhattan blog.
