“You really don’t want to know what happened here.” { Maedhros }
Caranthir didn’t even dignify the situation with a sigh. “How else will I be able to cover for you?” he asked, his eyes dull.
"Lucy, t-there's something I should tell you..." Natsu says, blushing profusely and stuttering the words. "L-Lucy, I-I-I love you..." he says, and leans in to kiss the blonde before she can say anything.
With a sudden grounding of words and actions combined, the numb feeling that Lucy had crossing throughout her body was causing her founding to shake under her feet. W—-what did just happen? The warmth that covered her lips remaining even after they broke away, and the unease at her heart only grew bigger as the moments passed.
“N—Natsu…” She muttered, taking a step back. This was too overwhelming for her to fully understand, and the simple thought of Natsu admitting such a thing, nonetheless to her, it made her confused in ways that she never encountered. He… loved her? It surely wasn’t in a way that he loved everyone else, not after that kind of gesture, so no doubts were lying there.
Even so, how, when did all this happen? Everything seemed to be just fine the day before—- they were still just friends, everything was simple. Surely thoughts of such came in mind, but things just didn’t seem to add up to her when facing this reality. It was so sudden, and no matter how much she could’ve thought and dwell about this situation— nothing was pinching her heart in the way that would’ve been expected.
Instead, concern and a swirl inside her stomach wrapped her being with a slight frown as her fingers nervously peeled the polish that covered her nails. What could she say to him in a situation like this? He was dear to her, no one could state otherwise, perhaps even more than what could be called a best friend. But things were good the way they were for her, and she wouldn’t like to believe that there were hints placed along the way.
Not that she would blame him for telling her that he felt that way, it’s just… she couldn’t help the frightening thought that they might have lost everything along with his words. She didn’t want that, she didn’t want to part away from someone so close to her, but… what is there meant for two beings not feeling mutual to each other?
She would wish that things weren’t that way, and this would be like in one of the novels that she read— when against all odds, somehow, the protagonist manages to fall in love with that person they never thought they would fall for. But reality was different, and ironically enough— they weren’t in that kind of fairy tale.
“…I’m sorry.” She finally spoke. To him, to Natsu, she would never lie. He was nothing but honest to her, and he deserved nothing less but the truth— even if it didn’t fit with his expectations. “I—I wish I could feel the same way, and return you the love that you deserve, but…” She lowered her gaze to the ground, the feeling of a heavy weight on her shoulders.
“…I can’t.”
