Stamp Art Gallery

1. In this art gallery, I saw a lot of artists experimenting with different mediums. For example, one artist used stitching to imitate parts of a photograph. I have seen renditions of famous paintings remade with string and stitches, but I have never seen them combined with a photograph. It was interesting to see how the artist incorporated the two.

2. My favorite piece was the pink raft, or more the picture that used the pink raft in it. I believe the image was a lady sitting on the raft shown above in front of the Lincoln Memorial. I liked how the pink stood out so much compared to the rest of the background. It really drew your eye towards it and made you wonder what the story was behind the raft and lady. The juxtaposition of colors made it a memorable piece.

3. This gallery really showcases pieces that push the boundaries of what visual art means. I feel like many think of typical paintings and drawings when discussing visual art, but this selection of works featured very different objects. Many were pictures, utilizing an object (like the raft) also shown in the gallery. They also incorporated different types of media, mixing in video with a stationary piece of work, or string and a photograph. These were just examples of atypical forms of visual art. These helps push the boundaries of the traditional definition of visual art because it shows that almost any type of material can be made to be art. An artist doesn’t need to know how to paint proportionally, but as long as they have an idea in their head and bring it to life, that is art.

October 10, 2019 - Wu Man, Pipa, The Clarice

I used to play piano, and I have been to plenty of recitals before. So when I looked into getting tickets for this show, I thought I knew what it was going to sound like, and what the vibe of the performance was going to be. My predictions were actually...kinda way off. I have never heard a pipa live, nor have I seen as many traditional Asian instruments be used at once. It’s interesting how different they sound compared to western instruments. I found that the pipa, and various Chinese wind instruments sound a lot sadder compared to western music.

My favorite part of this performance is when the whole ensemble played a traditional Japanese piece about a group travelling through Japan, going from house to house basically begging for food and a place to stay. I thought that the instruments meshed rather well, and it made me want to dance (a little bit, I’m not a big dancer). It was also a nice contrast to rest of the concert, as most of the songs were sad.

One artist that pushed the traditional boundaries of music was the man all the way towards the right side of the picture, who played the alto flute. During his solo, he stood up, and looked like he was ready to play. However, he surprised the audience by asking ‘What!’ in a very strange voice. His performance was a mixture of scatting and playing the flute. He seemed like he was talking and playing at the same time, but afterwards he explained how he had worked with a vocalist who uses scatting in jazz. They worked together to create this piece that incorporates both. It definitely pushes the boundaries of art for classical music. I would never imagine someone talking/singing while playing the flute and it created a new feeling for me. It felt a little weird, and out of place, but perhaps this will be the start of a new trend.

October 2, 2019 - The Visit, The Clarice

For the first part of completing my NextNow alternative assignment, I went to go see The Visit, preformed by students at the Clarice. I had never heard of this play before, so the script and stage was new to me in that way. The show also incorporated an actor that was sitting in the audience. He slowly became more integrated into the show. This was something I haven’t seen been done in any other play that I’ve been to, and it was interesting to watch that development along with the rest of the story.

This may not be my favorite experience from the show, but it is one worth discussing, and might be the most interesting part. The Visit’s premise is that a very rich lady is coming back to her hometown, which has become very poor when she left it. She offers the town a billion dollars if they decide to kill her ex boyfriend, who got her pregnant so many years ago. At the end, the town decides to kill the ex boyfriend, despite defending him in the beginning and claiming that they were his friends. Once he dies, the town then celebrates with money showering down on them, bright yellow lights, dancing, and a fast pace song. The contrast of moods just made me feel very strange about the situation, which was the play’s intent. I think it was smart especially to play around with the lights and the song, as they were themes through the play as well. I didn’t know they were that important until the end though.

A play usually can combine lots of different art disciplines, and I think that it’s very easy to push the boundaries of a regular arts type in this form. For example, there was often the use of dancing and music incorporated with the art discipline of acting. The actors had to know how to dance, or at least have decent coordination to accomplish this. Collaboration of interdisciplinary arts expand the definition of art. Things are more intertwined, and I feel that when analyzing a piece of art, you have to look at several different components to determine if it is successful or not. In this case, it would not be simply analyzing the acting. I think to determine the quality of this play, you would have to look at the acting, writing, music, stage setup, and more. Arts is now a much more broad category than before.

What did you see/hear/learn that was completely new to you? (2 points)

I’ve never seen an interactive art installation before, so seeing the installation by ARTECHOUSE was completely new to me. Of course I’ve seen things like this online, but moving the art myself and controlling it was entirely new. I’m used to seeing art on walls and on display with signs saying “do not touch”, so it was really cool to feel connected to the art and immersed in it.

What was your favorite performance/experience? Why was it your favorite? (2 points)

My favorite performance was The Jazz Professors. The other arts I experienced were amazing and compelling, but I personally enjoyed the live jazz music with original arrangements the most. I don’t listen to live music often, so witnessing such skilled musicians play was such a treat.

What instances did you notice where artists were collaborating or working beyond the boundaries of a particular arts discipline? How do you think collaboration and interdisciplinarity are helping to push the boundaries of what we understand art to be? (3 points)

The Dance Exchange: A Body Home, definitely reached beyond the boundaries of just dance. More than music and body movement to convey a story, this performance used poetry and projected images to share their narrative. Pushing boundaries and mixing these different mediums pushes people to move away from traditionalist views of art as only paintings or dance and towards new forms that take from different disciplines. Collaboration widens the public’s perspective of what art pertains to and how its done.

What did you see/hear/learn that was completely new to you? (2 points)

What was your favorite performance/experience? Why was it your favorite? (2 points)

1.) I learned that as technology innovates, approaches to art have other ways of being expressed. Also, I learned that light can play a pivotal role in the presentation of one’s art. Lastly, I got to see a fashion show curated by students, each of which had different styles of creating “fashion”, but each piece for each artist seemed intentional in its creation.

2.) My favorite performance from the event is the Fashion Show because I enjoyed the opportunity to see fashion as a discipline in art through the creations of each designer. The environment created by the lighting, the pieces in the show, and the models, made me genuinely intrigued to see the show. Also, the artists/designers seemed confident in their presentation of their ‘work’, which expressed to me the intentional effort behind each of their creations.

3.) I noticed in the “LUCID DREAMING” piece that the artist chose a technological and interactive approach to producing their art. I appreciate how the audience is not expected to simply look at the artist’s work, but also become involved with the work. I think collaboration and interdisciplinarity are helping to push the boundaries of what we understand to be art by allowing artists to explore other influences that could help express their intent and communicate it in a unique way that showcases either collaboration or interdisciplinarity.

Emma Weisbaum: TURNED ON (Read Receipts)

What did you see/hear/learn that was completely new to you?

What was completely new to me was dance performed without music. I have never seen a soundless dance performance, but I saw two of them at the NextDance event. One of them was performed by my dance teacher, and it was astounding to see how she incorporated the moves taught to us in class into her silent dance.

What was your favorite performance/experience? Why was it your favorite?

My favorite experience was ARTECHOUSE: LUCID DREAMING, because it was interactive. It’s a tall, sheer cubicle with what seemed to be projected ribbons on the sheer walls. The ribbons moved based on body motions. I attempted to perform a dance to see if the ribbons would react to more detailed moves, but I wasn’t very successful. Regardless, I enjoyed exploring the exhibit and (slightly) testing its limits.

At the Emma Weisbaum: TURNED ON (Read Receipts) exhibit, I observed paintings that depicted modern topics; there were texts, modern slang, and even references to viral vines and memes. I’ve never seen detailed paintings incorporating such ideas, so I really thought it was going beyond the traditional subjects of paintings. I think collaboration and interdisciplinarity help push the boundaries of what we understand art to be because it’s a gateway to new art forms and artistic innovation. When we combine different art forms, it creates something new and unique, which is, in a way, what art is all about. Much in the way that country and R&B were brought together to create rock ‘n’ roll, other disciplines can be combined to invent new genres. This is the power of interdisciplinary and collaborative work.

What did you see/hear/learn that was completely new to you?

I learned how to fold a butterfly using origami from the origami club that was teaching people at NextNow. In addition, I also saw how the lucid dreaming used interactive motion systems to allow us to see how our movements created movements on the screens surrounding us. Finally, I saw the art created by Weisbaum which created an amazing effect through blacklight and also conveyed the message about how technology affects our experiences with others when it comes to relationships.

What was your favorite performance/experience? Why was it your favorite?

My favorite experience was the Artechouse: Lucid Dreaming because it combined the elements of technology and visual art. Through this combination they allowed the audience to be able to see how certain aspects of technology can be implemented into art beyond just digital art or animation. In addition, the combination allowed for an interactive experience for the audience rather than just a visual experience.

In the Artechouse display, the people collaborated to integrate technology and art together to create an interactive piece for the audience. Normally, technology is not seen as a main part of art, many traditional pieces of art do not have to do with technology so a lot of how technology can be used for art is not thought about often. Collaboration allows people to see how two different parts of art can come together and create a totally different type of art piece. In addition, collaboration allows for not typically known types of art such as technology to be brought more into the limelight and so people will more likely be able to take into mind how technology is art as well.

1. In the Read Receipts exhibit I saw acrylic paintings that were very vibrant and some were abstract. The paintings had themes that felt very relevant to today’s world. There were references of memes like Kermit the frog and it was so interesting to see the things I witness on the internet reflected in art. The artist is very hip to today’s youth and you can tell through her work.

2. My favorite event was definitely the TURNED ON (Read Receipts) art exhibit. I am a painter as well and this was very inspiring to me because now I too want to incorporate humor into my works and make more art that is relevant to me rather than trying to please an audience. I liked looking through Weisbaum’s work.

3. In all of the events I felt like the artist was working beyond the boundaries of a particular arts discipline. At Read Receipts there was obviously visual art, but the artist was also capturing history and the millennial experience. At Lucid Dreaming the artist had to work with lights and cameras to create the art and that requires an understanding science and technology. The collaboration of different disciplines pushes the boundaries of art and allows the creation of unique art which could not previously exist. Art is not just one discipline: it is in everything and everywhere and it should be expressed through many different forms and viewed through many different lenses.
