Teesta-VI Accident Highlights Hydropower India Safety
A methane gas explosion inside the head-race tunnel of NHPC's 500 MW Teesta Stage-VI project on 20 July trapped 25 workers and project officials after a suspected methane pocket ignited, generating dense toxic fumes. By the morning of 22 July, authorities had confirmed at least 20 deaths, while rescue operations continued for those still missing. The project's civil works are being executed by Patel Engineering, with rescue efforts led by the NDRF, SDRF, DGMS and district authorities.
The incident underlines the importance of geological risk assessment and construction safety across India's expanding hydropower sector.

Samardung, and the gas that would not clear
Samardung, South Sikkim. At least 20 people are dead after a burst of suspected methane exploded inside the under-construction head-race tunnel of NHPC's 500 MW Teesta-VI project on Monday afternoon, rescue authorities say, with about five still unaccounted for and lingering gas slowing the recovery. NHPC's own 21 July filing put the toll at 10 "so far" and confirmed 25 trapped, project officers among them; the cause awaits a detailed investigation and every figure is provisional. Methane in Himalayan rock is the hazard nobody bored this tunnel expecting.

Teesta Outage Remains Key Story for Hydropower India
Nearly 21 months after the October 2023 glacial lake outburst flood, Teesta-III's six 200 MW units and NHPC's Teesta HPS Unit 3 continue to appear in the daily generation register as forced outages. The combined 1,370 MW remains unavailable even as reconstruction of the Chungthang dam progresses under approved plans.
The prolonged shutdown continues to influence eastern-region hydro availability during the monsoon season. Although reconstruction work is underway, the register still records revival as "subject to further information," making the projects an important factor for power planners and market participants.
The continued outage underlines the importance of infrastructure resilience in Hydropower India and its impact on regional electricity supply. EnergylineIndia.com tracks verified Indian Power news and Hydro power projects for the latest sector developments.
HCC wins Salal package under NHPC hydro projects
NHPC’s Salal Power Station award gives a clear procurement signal for NHPC hydro projects. Hindustan Construction Co. Ltd. secured the undersluice restoration package at Rs 524.18 crore on 30 June 2026, against an amended estimate of Rs 574.10 crore. The package is meant to make the concrete dam undersluices fully functional and operational.
This was not a basic maintenance tender. It combined civil rehabilitation, hydro-mechanical works, dredging capability, underwater inspection, steel liner experience and enabling works around an operating hydropower asset. That makes NHPC hydro projects relevant for EPC contractors, dredging specialists and hydro-mechanical vendors studying complex rehabilitation work.
The procurement terms changed materially before award. Corrigendum No. 11 raised the estimate from Rs 516.63 crore to Rs 574.10 crore. It also increased EMD to Rs 5.70 crore, annual turnover to Rs 270 crore, working capital to Rs 43 crore and bid capacity to the revised estimate. These changes strengthened the qualification filter for Hydro EPC tenders.
EnergylineIndia.com notes that only HCC and Patel Engineering reached financial opening, while PES-KSR Salal JV / PES Engineers was techno-commercially non-responsive. HCC’s bid was only 3.4% lower than Patel Engineering’s Rs 542 crore bid, showing a narrow and controlled price contest.
For market watchers, NHPC hydro projects are increasingly about risk allocation before price discovery. This Salal award shows how dam safety, sediment removal and gate functionality can shape bidder selection. NHPC hydro projects may see similar tightening in future rehabilitation tenders, Hydro EPC, Hydropower India, NHPC, HCC, Power Tenders.
