Upstream dependence remains despite rising Solar modules capacity
India has built a larger Solar modules manufacturing base, but localisation remains shallower further upstream. Parliamentary answers dated 30 June 2026 recorded 48,337 MW of solar production-linked incentive awards and Rs 73,400 crore of investment. Capacity created included about 42 GW of Solar modules, 12 GW of cells and 2 GW of ingot-wafer production, including 3.4 GW of integrated thin-film capacity.
Approved module capacity increased from about 22 GW in March 2023 to about 213 GW, while cell capacity stood near 32 GW. Listed ingot-wafer capacity was about 2 GW, and listed polysilicon capacity was zero. Renewable energy India manufacturing has expanded fastest at final assembly.
Awards do not establish commissioning or utilisation. Solar modules imports declined between FY22 and FY26, while exports increased over the period. Direct programme employment reached about 17,200.
