You hadn’t come to Connie’s to enjoy the lemonade. Something else had definitely caught your eye. You watched Nic, mouthful of nails as he attempted to right the gutter that hung above the shop. The sun beat down on him, heat being so intense. Sweat drenched down him and saturated his shirt, defining his abdomen underneath. It was hard to tear your look away.
“Just ask him out already.” Connie said.
“No,” you answered a little too quickly. It’s not that you didn’t want to. It’s just that you were unsure how to ask. Nic wasn’t exactly the warmest of people. “It’s not that I don’t want to. I just can’t.”
“Oh, darling, everybody sees how you look at him,” she continued, “Also, he’s also a lot more observant than you think. Shoot your shot. Here’s your chance.”
Nic had made his way inside to ask for a drink and filled the space between you and the next stool. His musk filled your senses. Closing your eyes, you relished in it. How would it feel to be wrapped in that scent every night? Heavenly.
Here’s your chance. “Nicolas.” You were thankful he couldn’t hear the nervousness in your voice, but it was the tug on his shirt that alerted him of your want for attention. He waited.
“I was thinking maybe we could go out sometime...” You couldn’t even meet his eyes. He tilted your chin up to him and signaled for you to speak once again this time slower.
“A date. Do you want to go on a date with me?” you choked out.
His eyes bugged, but then softened. He signed, his hands stacking on one another. You thought perhaps that meant he had to work.
Connie’s voice broke in. “He asked if you liked pancakes.
