Hey, I have seriously fine hair which is less than three inches in the back and on one side. My concern is breakage at the root once the dreading commences (on the long side) and as they mature... Additionally, I wonder how much scalp will be visible and for how long? Personally I like to prepare for committments like inviting dress when possible.... Have you used any butter or smoothing agents since I see from a prev post you're anti wax... Thanx for taking the time... Namaste ;)
Hey Anon!
So, I have pretty fine hair too, this was part of the reason I really wanted to dread my hair. It used to be pretty flat and kind of dull, but with dreads my hair has body, and the character I was always searching for (and with so much less work too)
Breaking shouldn't be a very big concern for you though, unless you are crocheting. Crocheting will weaken the dreads and make them thin, I've heard of people with crocheted dreads waking up one morning to find several dreads on their pillow. So avoid crocheting and you'll be just fine.
About the three inches in the back, I wouldn't worry too much, though that is pretty short for dreading, but over time, as your hair grows, those short hairs will knot up on their own and join up with a nearby dread.
The section size will determine the size of the dread, as dreads are usually about the same size around as the section the originate from. In pictures where you see lots of scalp showing under the dreads people have likely crocheted, this makes the dreads skinnier than their sections and thus scalp shows. Personally, the only place I have ever had an issue with my scalp sometimes showing is on the very top of my head, I have a few thick dreads and they were taking a while to dread up. It wasn't a big deal, and my scalp only showed when the dreads would flop over too much, and this only lasted a few months anyway, as my hair grew out and dreaded up; the section is now completely covered.
I understand wanting to be able to dress well for social engagements --Christmas is a pretty formal affair in my family-- and there are plenty of ways to wear your dreads for fancier occasions. Dread buns can be elegant and tidy --and are my personal favorite-- but also look into lacy headbands to wear your hair down but still back and away from your face, this will also help to cover any undreaded and messy roots while dreads are still young.
You're right, I am anti-wax, and for good reason. Wax will build up and eventually cause dread rot in your hair. however, if you want to smooth out and attempt to tame some wispy hairs for a night out I would recommend (pure) Aloe Vera gel. Just palm roll it on, and it should help give a sleeker look for the evening, and because it is water soluble and all natural it will wash out with your next shower.
Well, that was yet another reply that went longer than I had planned, hope it helps!
