Travelling slowly, we desire less to splurge often, one so that our budget can stretch further and two because we can afford to be extremely selective. Occasionally, there are certain places where its utterly unique, and we would ponder "why not"?
Hostal Las Olas, in Copacabana is such an example.
There are 7 individual suites, and it seems they are expanding further with other thematic buildings. We stayed in Suite 4, or simply named La Tortura, which means The Turtle.
The building is a conical shaped egg, consisting of two floors with wide glass windows - facing the serene highland lake Titicaca. The first floor is a cozy bedroom with a big round bed, coffee table and a small kitchenette. The second floor has a smaller oval bed, 2 hammocks, and a dining table. Then there is a private garden with more hammocks and lazy chairs. The whole compound can easily fit a family of four.
We prepared and had all our meals at home, because it is just too cozy. This is even with La Copula, one of the best restaurants in Copacabana being just a minute walk away. There are other buildings, are just as unique - though I must say the Turtle is more eccentric than the rest.
For all the rave about this place, it's not maintained to be a top notch service hotel. There are minor cracks on the windows, and the cookers, furnishings are showing some wear and tear. Nevertheless, its fully equipped enough to feel comfortable and at home - and we certainly felt so spending even just one night here.
We were lucky to get a night via 'walk-in'. Looking at its booking records, it has been fully occupied for the weeks before, and similar for the next week to come. Yet, this is not during the peak season. So, if you are planning to come here - do seriously BOOK AHEAD.
