You would think that I would get it again after getting it once, but so far I've not had a single bit of luck. My golf hasn't been trash, but it's not been as good as that one time. Thank you, that's exactly what happened, I was proud and they should have been proud of me! It's very much because you're tall and lanky, mate. I'm not too bad on the court myself, though I feel like you'd walk all over me given how much taller than me you are, but we should play sometime! How have you been doing on your basketball game lately? Have you hit any more threes? I'll admit that I play golf about twice a week, if not more, and while they've not been bad games, they could have been better. I think that was my one moment to shine, mate. ( @nchoult )

Yowie

This week’s fantastic being is the yowie. Like the sasquatch or the yeti, the yowie is a mythical or cryptid hominid living, in this case, in Australia. Also like both the sasquatch and the yeti, the yowie originates in the legends of the region’s indigenous peoples. It is said to be hairy and ape-like, standing at 2.1 - 3.6 metres (6’11” – 12’). Their feet are said to be very large; their noses are wide and flat. Ordinarily they are reclusive and shy, but sometimes they are found to be aggressive.

The earliest written record of the creature dates from November 1876, printed in the Australian Town and Country Journal; that record reads, “Who has not heard, from the earliest settlement of the colony, the blacks [sic] speaking of some unearthly animal or inhuman creature … namely the Yahoo-Devil Devil, of hairy man of the wood[…].” The earliest written record, then, is not the earliest report. Evidence for the creatures is more inconsistent than that for the sasquatch, with footprints varying wildly in size, shape, and toe number. Nonetheless, reported sightings continue to the present day.

The yowie may bear some relation to the bunyip, or the kianpraty, which lives in swamps, creeks, billabongs, and other small bodies of water; at least, they often have similar or identical descriptions. The term comes from Aboriginal Australian, and is often translated as devil or evil spirit, but that doesn’t really capture the bunyip’s role, which is more sophisticated than that. (I say they have similar descriptions; bunyips are described very differently in different sources, and in some cases they are much more animal than hominid, taking on aspects of dogs, crocodiles, horses, and walruses.)

Green Flash

This week's meteorological phenomenon is the green flash.

This phenomenon appears at sunset (or sunrise), and is caused by atmospheric refraction - mirage, specifically. As the rays of the sun pass through the atmosphere, they separate into coloured wavelengths. The blue, indigo, and violet wavelengths (being the last visible wavelengths on the spectrum) are absorbed by the atmosphere for reasons I don't understand, leaving green as the only wavelength visible during this phenomenon. Rarely there is sufficient blue light visible that a "blue flash" appears, although the rarity of this occurrence has provided little opportunity for study.

There are a number of different versions of the green flash which appear depending on the circumstances. Pictured above is a "mock-mirage flash," but other forms include the "inferior-mirage flash," the "sub-duct flash," and the "green ray" which appears as a green column of light which can last up to fifteen seconds.
