A little nostalgia never hurt anyone. Unless we're talking about me trying to shave with a straight razor like my Grandfathers did. That did hurt. A lot. Nostalgia can come in many forms though. Whether it’s a throwback jersey or a Kerouac book, old blue jeans or a family photo album, looking back can also be one of the best ways to look ahead. That’s where I found myself when listening to Light of Day from Nick Dittmeier. This albums nostalgia comes from an unlikely place…it’s honest. From the very first verse on the record you know Nick is shooting straight
“Please forgive me, for what I done wrong/Cocaine on the dashboard, an empty box of reds on the floor”.
The song speaks from a place of waking up, looking around and thinking “my lord what happened last night”, and we have all been there. This album has so many more honest moments as well. “My Grey Suit” tells the story of those serious, sad, or important moments in his life and the suit that goes with them. “Simple as a Nod” is about those fleeting moments of eye contact before a relationship starts, simple, fast, but gigantic in the long run. “Songs the House Makes” is a melodic and warm song about how even the simplest sounds, a dog barking, the sound of the coffee pot, the innocence that each new morning brings can be the real music to your ears. I really enjoyed this album. It’s a great collection of songs, all of them catchy, breezy and fun in their own unique way. And again, they are honest! The songs take you back to a time when music was fun, and true, and honest. And honesty goes a long, long way with me.
