The Deep is the 1977 film adaptation of Peter Benchley's book about a treasure hunting couple holidaying in Bermuda. Starring gorgeous Bond girl Jacqueline Bisset in her prime, the film became a classic. After discovering a load of drugs in a shipwreck, Bisset & husband Nick Nolte are soon pursued by a group of dangerous Haitians. This action adventure film drags a little too often in the middle section when the three leads exchange exposition about history and galleons and artefacts but it’s still a great movie. Robert Shaw from Jaws plays Quint-lite and you half expect him to yell "Chief!!" or "HOOPERRR!!!" at any moment. John Barry's score is beautifully romantic. Best of all are the impressively cinematic underwater action sequences.
Happy 85th, Nick Nolte.
