Out of Darkness ~ Chapter 16 Preview
When you woke, the low din of voices nearby was the first thing you were aware of. Your mind spun, the last thing you remembered were the men with guns, threatening David and Rachel, the children.
“Stay,” Rachel whispered, her slim hand a press on your shoulder.
You nodded, looking around. You thought you were still in the factory but in a different room. It was dark and dusty. Turning your head, you saw the children huddled up in the corner, clinging to each other in the shadows.
One pair of dark eyes met yours in the darkness. He moved away from the group take your hand.
“I’ll protect you,” Timmy whispered.
You squeezed his hand, smiled at him.
Struggling, you managed to sit up. The sharp pain at the side of your belly took your breath away.
Tears welled up in your eyes, as your hands smoothed over your tummy. Your heart flew in panic remembering that you hit the one man with the iron. You remembered the pain that took you down…
Was your baby okay?
The gentle flutter under your palm had tears sliding down your cheeks. Rachel’s eyes were wide on you. Timmy’s smaller hand pressed next to yours. He grinned up at you.
“They’re okay,” he whispered, dark eyes rounded in wonder.
You nodded, wrapping your arms around the child, and hugging him tightly in your relief.
Looking around, you noticed several things. Harvey was behind the door of the small room you were crowded into, the side of his head streaked in blood that stained his graying hair. David crouched behind him, a metal pipe in his hand.
If that door opened, the first person they’d encounter was the young man who showed up to save you from the second gunman. Rachel called him Grey. He must have been the one Curtis said died saving him.
He’d saved you.
“What’s happening?” you whispered in Rachel’s ear.
“They’re here,” she said quietly.
She didn’t need to say more. They’d finally caught up with you. A cold spike of fear shot through your heart at the thought. They were here to hurt Curtis, to hurt you just to get to him.
And Nick…
You just knew Nick was here.
