1. Copper Surface Condition Can Ruin Adhesion Quietly
One of the first issues we ran into wasn’t the nickel bath. It was the copper itself.
Copper oxidizes fast.Parts that looked clean after machining or forming were already developing a thin oxide layer before plating even started.
What happened:
Nickel plated smoothly at first
Adhesion looked fine visually
Peeling showed up later during assembly or thermal exposure
The root cause wasn’t poor nickel plating. It was insufficient copper surface activation.
What we changed:
We now treat copper surface prep as a time-sensitive step, not a checklist item. Delays between prep and plating are tightly controlled.
2. Nickel Thickness Builds Faster Than Expected on Copper
In one project, we followed the same thickness assumptions used for steel parts.
